Mr. Kleese was born May 20, 1907, in Washington, to Harry Dewitt and Edna (Helm) Kleese. He married Lucille Fisher, June 25, 1928, in Washington. She preceded him in death in 1967. He later married Elsie Stimson Dockendorff, April 2, 1991, in West Chester. Mr. Kleese was a lifelong Washington County resident. He attended Franklin Center Country School through eighth grade and graduated from West Chester High School in 1925. He was a farmer until his semi-retirement in 1991. He was a member of the Farm Bureau, 4-H and the Fair Board, the Cattlemen’s Association, the Soybean Association, the American Cancer Society, the Red Cross. He served as a county trustee, and held several offices in the United Methodist church of West Chester. He was a member of the Washington Saddle Club, the singing Grandpas, and the Keotones choral group. He was an avid horsemen who participated in parades throughout the area. He was honored by the State of Iowa for his volunteerism. Mr. Kleese is survived by his wife, Elsie Kleese of Washington; one daughter, Joyce Nebel and husband Ray of West Chester; one step-son Lyle Dockendorff and friend Frances of Portland, Ore.; three step-daughters, Karen Murphy and husband Gary of Washington, Janice Dockendorff and husband John Dowdall of Marion and Mary Margaret Dockendorff of Phoenix, Ariz.; five grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; and one sister, Frances Bauer and husband Eldin of Washington. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Lucille; one son, Robert Eugene Kleese; one grandson; one sister, Edith Bauer; and one half-sister, Mabel Griffith.
