Smith, Farmer, the Victims--First Train Has Hot Box, and In Stopping to Cool Car Second Train Crashes into Rear --------------- Death was meted out suddenly at 10:45 today to Louis Johnson, of Clinton, and Frank E. Smith of Tipton, when a merchandise train, No. 125, on the Chicago & Northwestern, crashed into the rear of an extra freight at a point one-half mile west of State Center. Johnson, who was a freight brakeman on the head train, and Smith, who was in charge of an emigrant outfit, were both caught in the wreckage and were killed instantly. Their bodies were cremated in the blaze that followed the wreck. Train Runs Past Signals The crew of the extra freight discovered a hot box shortly after leaving State Center, and the fire had been communicated to the car. The train was stopped, and efforts were made to extinguish the blaze and get the box cooled. Torpedoes were placed back of the train about four car lengths, but too close to prevent the engineer of No. 125 stopping after striking the signals. Whether or not a flagman had been sent back of the first freight could not be learned either at the State Center station or at the scene of the wreck. Johnson at Rear of Train Louis Johnson, the rear brakeman who was killed, was at the end of the train when the crash came. The man's body fell into the ruins of the wrecked cars, and the fire that broke out immediately made it impossible to recover the body from the ruins before it was incinerated. Smith Caught in Emigrant Car While accompanying his emigrant car bearing his farming utensils and household effects to a new home at Arthur, Frank E. Smith, a young farmer from Tipton, met instant death, and his body, like Johnson's, was prey to the flames by being buried beneath the wreckage. At State Center, or among the trainmen, no knowledge of the identity of the occupant of the emigrant car was available. It was known, however, that the car was received at Tipton, destined for Arthur. The agent of the Chicago & Northwestern at Tipton, who was called by the T.-R. on the telephone, said that the emigrant leaving Tipton destined for Arthur was Frank E. Smith. Mr. Smith departed from Tipton at noon Tuesday, leaving behind him a young wife and two small children who intended to join the husband and father in the new Ida county home in a few days.
