Frank Gilbert, an editorial writer on the staff of the Chicago Inter-Ocean, died of heart disease at his home, 16 Walton place, at 9:15 o'clock last night. Mr. Gilbert had been calling at the house of George Wheeler Hinman, editor of the Inter-Ocean, 53 Bellevue place, and left there at 8:45 apparently In good health. When he reached home Mr. Gilbert complained of a difficulty in breathing and he coughed considerably. He went up-stairs to his sleeping apartment and died there within a few minutes. Frank Gilbert was born in Pittsford. Vt., Sept. 28, 1839. He was the son of Simon and Margaret Gilbert. His parents came of New England stock, both his grandfathers having been soldiers in the revolutionary army. Their home was on an ordinary Vermont farm, but his parents were enabled to give each of their seven sons a collegiate education. Mr. Gilbert attended the University of Vermont, and in 1866 came to Chicago and engaged in the newspaper business, in which profession he remained until his death. Mr. Gilbert was the leading editorial writer on the Inter Ocean from 1881 to 1884. After two or three years' association with THE TRIBUNE in the same capacity he returned to the Inter Ocean in 1888, and had been connected with that newspaper from that date. For eleven years earlier in his Chicago career Mr. Gilbert was associate editor of the Evening Journal. Mr. Gilbert was Assistant United States Treasurer from 1877 to 1881, being in charge of the subtreasury in Chicago. In 1890 he was United States Census Commissioner for the district of Chicago. Mr. Gilbert married Frances L. Baker, daughter of Marcena Baker of Cattaraugus, N. Y. Two brothers survive him -- Frederick of Malone, N. Y., and Dr. Simeon Gilbert of Chicago. He left a widow, but no children. Mr. Gilbert was a cousin of the late Robert G. Ingersoll. * Published in the Chicago Tribune, Chicago, Illinois, 5 Nov 1899, Sun • Page 1 * FUNERAL OF FRANK GILBERT. Services Today at the Residence, No. 16 Walton Place. The sudden death of Frank Gilbert was a shock to a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. A large number of people called at the family residence to express sympathy and telegrams were received from all parts of the country. The funeral will be held at 12:30 today, in the residence, No. 16 Walton place. The Rev. Dr. Frank W. Gunsaulus will officiate. The pall bearers will be: John Vance Cheney, Joseph Winterbotham, Shirley High, George W. Hinman, Wm. Penn Nixon, Thomas C. Mac Millan, W. H. Busbey, and Dr. O. W. Nixon. Interment will be at Franklinville, Cattaraugus county, N. Y., the old home of Mrs. Gilbert.
