Description	:	Mrs. Sarah Nye Thorndike, who died at Pittsford, July 29th, was daughter of Deacon Simeon Gilbert and Margaret Ingersoll Gilbert of Pittsford. Mrs. Thorndike was born in Pittsford, February 11, 1833, where she spent the early part of her life. She attended school at Castleton Seminary and graduated at the Granville, N. Y., academy. Read More	Mrs. Sarah Nye Thorndike, who died at Pittsford, July 29th, was daughter of Deacon Simeon Gilbert and Margaret Ingersoll Gilbert of Pittsford. Mrs. Thorndike was born in Pittsford, February 11, 1833, where she spent the early part of her life. She attended school at Castleton Seminary and graduated at the Granville, N. Y., academy. Later she showed remarkable ability as a teacher, having taught with great success in the academies at Toledo, Ohio., Royalston, Vermont and Malone, N. Y. At the latter place she married Gen. S. C. F. Thorndike where she made her home until 1893 when she came to the old Gilbert home in Pittsford where she has since resided. Although of delicate health she has always taken an active interest and part in the church and literary life of the community. Being for many years vice-president of the Friday club and one of the officers of the W. C. T. U., the Ladies' Missionary society, and the Ladies' Aid society of the Congregational church. She is survived by a stepdaughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Huntington of Malone, a step-grandson and daughter in Lima, Peru, a brother, Rev. Simeon Gilbert, D. D., and several nieces and nephews. Although having no children of her own she has been loved and honored as a mother by three nieces and one grandniece, Mrs. Cyrus King, Mrs. Frederick L. Hills, Miss Clara M. Gilbert and Miss Cornelia King, the last three of whom survive her, and for all of whom she made a true home during their young womanhood.
