January 19, 1909 - Carroll Sentinel - In the death of Frank Goecke, which occurred at his home in Kniest township last Monday night, one of the pioneers of that part of the county passed to his long reward. Mr. Goecke was born in Northvold, Germany in 1830 and moved to America in 1861 and located at Hazel Green, Wis. That year he was united in marriage to Miss Gertrude Lohmann. In the fall of 1868 they moved to Carroll county and settled in Kniest township and he has resided on the same farm ever since. There he raised a family of children and was considered among the substantial and industrious citizens that did their part so well in making this county what it is. Mr. and Mrs. Goecke were the parents of fourteen children, six of whom died in infancy. The surviving ones are: Frank and John of this city, William of Grant township, and Henry and Joseph of Kniest township. There are also three married daughters (they are: Mrs. Wm. Joebgen, Mrs. John Walz and Mrs. Henry Otto. The funeral was held at St. Mary's church at Mt. Carmel and the remains were buried in the church cemetery at that place. For the past ten years Mr. Goecke has been an invalid, having sustained a paralytic stroke from which he never fully recovered. For the past two years he has been confined to his bed the greater portion of his time and he has been almost helpless. During all his trials he has been a patient sufferer and never lost faith in Him who, he had the assurance, would call him home when the time came. He was patient and uncomplaining and bore up under his affliction with genuine Christian fortitude. The widow, who survives him, will take her home with her son Joseph and family. The bereaved relatives have the sympathy of their many friends in their sad loss.
