Dec 28, 1936 - Carroll Daily Herald - John Goecke, a prominent Carroll resident, died at his home, 230 West 13th street, shortly before 12 o'clock Saturday night. Mr. Goecke's death was caused by pneumonia with which he had been ill only a few days. Last Monday evening he was suddenly seized with a chill, but he thought it was only an indication of a cold and he attended devotions at the St. Lawrence church that evening. Immediately upon his return home from church he went to bed and from Tuesday on he was critically ill. His wife and family were at his bedside when he passed away. The body was taken Sunday afternoon from the Gregory Funeral home to the family home, where it will remain until the rites. Services will be held at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning at the St. Lawrence church and burial will be in the parish cemetery. Pallbearers will be J. Julius Kuhl, J.F. Maher, J.P. Cranny, George B. Werdel, H.J. Walz and T.J. Kanne. Mr. Goecke was born at Hazel Green, Wis., Nov. 28, 1868, a son of Frank and Gertrude Laumann Goecke. He was only six months old when his parents came from Wisconsin in a prairie schooner to settle on a farm one mile east and two miles north of Mt. Carmel. Mr. Goecke attended the rural school in his district and also Our Lady of Mt. Carmel school. He remained at home to assist his father on the farm until he was 27 years old. Then he came to Carroll to go into business with his brother, Frank Goecke. For a number of years they had an implement store. They later opened a variety store, engaging in this business from 1906 until 1922. Since that time Mr. Goecke had been retired. On Sept. 25, 1903, at Ss. Peter and Paul's church Miss Emma Daiker of Carroll became Mr Goecke's bride. Their home has always been in Carroll. Since his retirement from business Mr. Goecke has been actively engaged in taking care of his properties and other business interests in Carroll. He was endowed with good business acumen and was successful in his undertakings. He enjoyed beautifying the grounds of his home and was always busy with work which to him was a pleasure. He was a member of the St. Lawrence church. Surviving are his widow and two sons, Walter Goecke of Red Oak, where he is located as a representative of the Beebe-Runyan furniture company and Maurice Goecke, who has his headquarters at home as a representative of the Burgess Battery company. He also leaves a small grandson, John Walter Goecke of Red Oak; four brothers, Frank Goecke, Carroll; Joseph Goecke, who lives on the old homestead north of Carroll; William Goecke, Spirit Lake; Henry Goecke, Estherville, and three sisters, Mrs William Joebgen, Carroll; Mrs John Walz of Carroll, who is wintering in Los Angeles, Calif., and Mrs. Henry Otto, also of Carroll. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Goecke and little son have been at the Goecke home since Tuesday. Mrs. H.M. Fisher of Jefferson and Miss Eleanor Cawiezel of Sioux City are also here. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Goecke of Estherville and William Goecke of Spirit Lake and other relatives are coming Monday.
