West was walking along the highway near Cascade when he was struck by a vehicle operated by Harold R. Moser, about 35, Waynesboro, who was charged with manslaughter by auto, reckless driving and failing to drive to the right of the center of the hiqhway. The State asked a jury trail at a preliminary hearing today before Magistate Paul Ottinger and Moser was ordered held in $1000 bail. The fatal accident, the third in this county so far this year, occurred not far from Fort Ritchie at 6:50 Saturday evening. State Police at first were at a loss to exactly figure out just how the accident occurred. One theory was that the passing car had hit the parked car, and then drove the parked car into the pedestrian. However State Police and State's Attorney John Hollyday yesterday afternoon investigated further. They found trail of blood over the top of the parked far, supporting the theory that West was first hit by the passing car, then thrown over the parked car, with the body being found under the parked car. West was walking just off the highway, where the car belonging to Truman R. Rose of Salem, N.C. was parked. The Moser car, according to State Police, went off the left side of the highway just before the smashup. The deceased was born at Lantz, Md., son of the late William and Margaret Ott West. He lived his early life at Lantz. He learned the machinist trade at the Landis Tool Co., in Waynesboro. Forty-seven years ago he went to Sparrows Point, Md., where he was employed by the Bethleham Steel Co. for 40 years. At time of his retirement seven years ago he was assistant foreman of machine shop at the plant. He returned to Cascade, and lived with his sister, Miss Alta West. He was a member of Jr. 0. U. A. M., Pen Mar Council and of the Biddle Club of Baltimore. He is survived by sisters, Miss Alta West, Cascade; Mrs. William Sturdevant, Cascade; Mrs. Lloyd Sensabaugh, Smithsburg, Route 2; brothers, Charles West, Lantz; John West, Highfield. Services on Tuesday afternoon at 1 o'clock from Bethel Church of God, near Cascade, with Rev. C. M. McGaha officiating, interment will be in cemetery adjoining. Friends may call at the Funeral Home in Waynesboro this evening from 7 until 9 o'clock and at the church Tuesday from 1 p.m. until time of the service.
