Description	:	EDGECOMBE, FRANK O.—Frank O. Edgecombe was born on a farm near Leipsic, Ohio, February 13, 1864. In April, 1865, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Humphrey M. Edgecombe, moved to southeastern Nebraska, buying and settling on a farm south of Rulo. Mr. Edgecombe was graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University, and then located at York, with a B. Sc. Edgecombe was born on a farm near Leipsic, Ohio, February 13, 1864. In April, 1865, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Humphrey M. Edgecombe, moved to southeastern Nebraska, buying and settling on a farm south of Rulo. Mr. Edgecombe was graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University, and then located at York, with a B. Sc. Degree in 1884. In 1866 Mr. Edgecombe entered the Bank of Rulo as bookkeeper and assistant cashier. A little later the bank took out a national charter as the First National Bank of Rulo, Mr. Edgecombe, becoming a stockholder and its cashier. September 15, 1887 Mr. Edgecombe was married to Miss Hattie B. Mengel, at Valparaiso, Neb. She had been a college classmate. In 1889 Mr. Edgecombe bough a half interest in the Falls City Journal. In 1890 he retired from the bank, bought the other half interest in the Journal, moved to Falls City and went definitely into the newspaper business. In the prairie chicken season in 1892 while hunters were walking through a stubble field in western Nebraska, one of them peppered Mr. Edgecombe with shot, causing immediate and permanent blindness. After twenty-three days in an Omaha hospital, getting his first experience in being read to and in dictating to a stenographer, Mr. Edgecombe returned home and resumed his usual work in the Journal office. In 1894 Mr. Edgecombe sold the Falls City Journal, bought two newspapers at Geneva, consolidated them, and moved his family to Geneva, which ever since has been his home. In 1904 Mr. Edgecombe and two associates bought the Nebraska Farmer and a little later moved it from Omaha to Lincoln. In 1908 Mr. Edgecombe sold his interest in that publication and bought a controlling interest in the Beatrice Daily Express, a connection he maintained twelve years. In January, 1893, Mr. Edgecombe was elected president of the Nebraska Press association, at its annual convention in Columbus. He presided over the annual convention of the association in Lincoln in January of the following year. Since 1905 Mr. Edgecombe had held continuous membership in the National Editorial association. With its members, Mr. and Mrs. Edgecombe visited nearly every state in the Union, the Canadian provinces three times, the Hawaiian Islands, the Panama Canal Zone, Mexico and Cuba. At its annual convention in Richmond, Va., in June, 1925, Mr. Edgecombe was elected president of the National Editorial association. He presided over the sessions of the association at Los Angeles in July, 1926. Travel and the resulting contacts with many publishers and others in this and other countries enabled the publisher of The Signal to bring to the readers of his newspaper the fruits of experience, with observation and ripened judgment. His ideals were set forth in an address before the school of journalism of the University of Nebraska, given in February, 1925, as follows: "The Highest achievement of an editor is to make plain and desirable the high things of life, to inform those needing information, to cheer the downcast, to refresh the weary, to inspire the discouraged, to shame the sordid, to thwart the oppressor, to ennoble labor, to beautify the drab, to make righteousness readable. Fashion your editorial page after that manner, back it with sound business discretion, bolster it with unflagging zeal, make of your labor a thing of joy and all will be well." Mr. Edgecombe is survived by two children, Tyler of the Nebraska Signal, and Helen (Mrs. Ed Hoyt) of McCook, six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. A. G. Walker of Fairmont, Mrs. Edgecombe died September 13, 1946. He was also preceded in death by a son, Warren, and a daughter, Ruth. Funeral services will be held at the Geneva Methodist church at 2 p. m. Friday, August 8, Rev. Ben F. Wallace will officiate. Interment will be in the Geneva cemetery.
