Read More	EDGECOMBE, TYLER—Tyler Edgecombe, son of Frank O. and Hattie Edgecombe, was born July 10, 1888, at Rulo, Neb. He passed away at Geneva, Neb., Wednesday, February 23, 1972, at the age of 83 years, 7 months and 13 days. In 1894, Tyler’s father, a former banker at Rulo and a newspaper publisher at Falls City, purchased the Geneva Republican and the Geneva Journal, competing newspapers at Geneva, and the family moved to Geneva. In 1896 Frank Edgecombe purchased The Nebraska Signal of Fairmont, which had been established October 27, 1881, and moved it to Geneva and combined the Geneva newspapers with it, continuing the name, The Nebraska Signal. Tyler grew up with The Signal which continued its growth and consolidation with 16 other weekly newspapers in the area. He graduated from Geneva high school in 1905. He attended Nebraska Wesleyan University one year, graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Agriculture in 1907 and from the University of Nebraska in 1911. He acquired early newspaper experience as editor for three years of The Daily Nebraskan, daily newspaper published by students at the University of Nebraska. After serving two years on the staff of The Beatrice Daily Express, Tyler returned to Geneva in 1913 and joined the staff of The Signal. He became co-publisher of The signal in 1941 and continued as publisher after the death of Frank O. Edgecombe in 1947. His son John joined him as co-publisher in 1954. Tyler was married to Gladys Dingman of Geneva, October 11, 1913. Four children were born to this union, Arleanne, Mary, Jean and John. The Tyler Edgecombe’s observed their golden wedding anniversary in 1963, when all of their children and their families, other relatives and many friends joined them at an open house in observance of the anniversary. He was always interested in Geneva and Fillmore county, and took an active part in all worthwhile activities whenever asked to do so. He was an early member of the Geneva Community Club, serving as secretary many years and as president one year. He was involved in the Geneva Alumni association and was instrumental in re-organizing the association in 1927. He served as president, secretary and member of many committees of the association through the years. He was proud of his classmates, known as the “ought-fivers,” who met regularly after holding their 50-year reunion in 1955. A loyal member of the Geneva Methodist church, he served on the official board, was president of the board of Trustees and was Sunday school secretary many years. He was interested in government, serving many years as secretary of the local caucuses. He was secretary of the Republican County committee several years and assisted candidates of all parties in planning their political advertising and political campaigns. Tyler joined the Geneva Masonic lodge in 1913 and became a Master Mason in 1914. He was a member of Sesostris Shrine Temple and the Scottish Rite of Lincoln, past master of Geneva Lodge No. 79, A.F.& A.M., past patron of Geneva Chapter No. 180, O. E. S., high priest of Triune chapter No. 41, R. A. M. , and illustrious master of Naomi council No. 26, R.&S. M. He received a 50-year pin in 1964 from Geneva lodge and held 50-year pins from the other Masonic orders. He became well known in the weekly newspaper field. He was named head of the Nebraska Press Association in 1960, a position held by his father and now held by his son, John. Tyler was on committees of the National Editorial Association and was a regular attendant at all state and national conventions. Tyler was one of the first members of the Geneva Rotary club, which was formed in 1958, serving as president in 1965-66. He had a nearly perfect attendance record until becoming ill a few months ago. The United States Weather Bureau awarded Tyler a 50-year pin in 1969 for keeping and reporting weather at the Geneva station, a duty he performed until his final illness. In 1966, when Geneva and Fillmore county formed a corporation to observe the Nebraska Centennial in this area, Tyler was named president of the corporation and was effective in making the observance outstanding. The veteran Geneva newspaper publisher remained a key part of The Signal organization and the community in which he lived until illness caused him to lessen his activities. He assisted at the Signal office until a few weeks before his passing. He was hospitalized in Lincoln General hospital in Lincoln and then at the Fillmore County hospital in Geneva, where he passed away. He was predeceased by his parents, a sister, Ruth, who passed away at the age of nine months, and a brother Warren, who passed away at the age of 21. He is survived by his wife Gladys’ three daughters, Arleane (Mrs. Don Ammon) of Cheyenne, Wyo., Mrs. Mary White of Hawthorne, Cal., and Jean (Mrs. E. J. Elam), of San Carlos, Cal.; son John of Geneva; a sister, Mrs. Ed. (Helen) Hoyt of Denver, Col; eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, a brother-in-law, two sons-in-law and a daughter-in-law. Funeral services were conducted from the United Methodist church of Geneva at 2 p. m. Sunday, February 27, with Rev. John E. Stayton officiating. Mrs. H. A. Rosenau of Geneva sang “In the Garden,” accompanied by Mrs. Melvin Olson of Geneva, organist. Pallbearers were Leonard Bazelman, Hugh Hadsell, Howard Hamilton, Melvin Ralston and Carl E. Schneider, all of Geneva, and Lyle A. Young of Lincoln. Honorary pallbearers were Grady Corbitt, Lee Harrold, Harry Ward and Earl H. Wilkins, all of Geneva. Interment was in the Geneva cemetery with Masonic services at the graveside, being conducted by Geneva Lodge No. 79, A.F. & A.M., with Dr. David A Portwood serving as worshipful master.
