Edgecombe, died at the Bailey sanatorium at Lincoln, Neb., at 4 p.m. Monday February 28th, 1921, aged 21 years, 8 months and 24 days. On Wednesday of last week, Warren received a request from the superintendent of the ninth district of the United States Public Health Service to go to Lincoln and report to Dr. L. W. Elwood, agent of the public health service for Nebraska, for examination in relation to his government war risk insurance. He went to Lincoln the following day, accompanied by his parents, and reported to Dr. Elwood as directed. Dr. Elwood sent him to Dr. B. F. Williams for examination. The two physicians decided that in compliance with government regulations to the fullest extend and to avoid having to fill out more blanks later, it would be desirable to have Warren enter a hospital for a few days for observation. There was to be nothing in the way of treatment or anything else except observation for the purpose of giving the war risk insurance bureau all of the information desired. About 4 o’clock that afternoon Warren reported again to Dr. Elwood and was given an order to report at the Dr. Bailey sanatorium with the understanding that he was to remain there three or four days. He seemed to be feeling unusually well, and was cheerful and was interested in everything that was going on. Dr. Harold Shickley has an office in the building in which Dr. Williams has his office, and as they were on their way to the office of Dr. Williams, Warren and his father stepped into Dr. Shickley’s office long enough to shake hands with him. Dr. Shickley remarked on how well Warren was looking and they visited briskly a few moments. Warren wrote his parents every morning from the sanatorium and they received each letter the following morning. He said in each letter that he was getting along very pleasantly. There was no hint of illness or of anything else undesirable. The usual letter from him was received by his parents Tuesday morning. They were horrified when they opened a telegram two hours later announcing that he had died at 4 o’clock the preceding afternoon. From information obtained later, it was learned that about ten minutes before Warren suffered the fatal attack, he was talking over the telephone to some person in the city. He was apparently in good spirits in every way. The house physician, Dr. Lockwood, was at his side almost instantly and trained nurses were at hand to give assistance but human efforts were unavailing, and Warren’s spirit passed a few minutes after the attack began. Warren Shaff Edgecombe was born at Geneva, Neb., June 4, 1899. He grew to manhood here. He graduated from the Geneva high school with the class of 1917, completing the four year course in three years. In the early part of 1918 his parents consented to his urgent wish to take part in the war. He went to the Great Lakes training station near Chicago and enlisted in the Navy March 29, 1918. He was rated as a musician of the second class. In the course of his training and service, he was sent to the concentration base at Hampton Roads, Va. When he was on the point of being assigned to sea duty, he suffered an attack of illness and a few days later, August 9th, 1918, he was discharged on account of physical disability. Since that time Warren has not been in such health as to be able to undertake regular work of any kind, but generally his physical appearance did not indicate serious disability. His parents took many steps and tried every means of which they knew that gave any hope of restoring him to normal health. In addition to the service of the family physician and other local physicians, numerous other efforts were made. Chief among these was a thorough examination at the Mayo Hospital at Rochester, Minn., and a surgical operation for the relief of brain pressure at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Lincoln May 12th, 1919. The operation gave considerable relief. About two months ago Warren returned from spending a couple of months in Florida and since his return he had seemed in rather better health than he had been for some time and his weight and physical appearance had improved. Warren is survived by his parents and one brother and one sister, Tyler and Helen Edgecombe, both of Geneva, and by his grandfather, H. M. Edgecombe, who makes his home with Warren’s parents. He was a member of the Geneva Methodist Episcopal Church and of the Fillmore post No. 69 of the American Legion. The body arrived from Lincoln Tuesday evening in charge of Tyler Edgecombe, and was met at Fairmont by members of the American Legion. The following members of the Legion served as a guard of honor during the night: Robert Waring, Hal E. Fellows, Clay Thomas, Frank Fiedler, Walter Weis, William Schneider, Arthur Weis and Thomas J. Keenan. The funeral took place from the family home in Geneva at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, and was conducted by Rev. R. H. Thompson of the Methodist Church. The music was in charge of the Methodist choir. The American Legion had charge of the burial service at the cemetery and the following members of the American Legion acted as pallbearers: Melvin Ralston, William Johnson, Clifford McKimmey, Robert Bruce, Clay Thomas and Peter Gergen. The funeral procession was in this order: Geneva Community band, colors with guard of honor, firing squad, pallbearers in naval uniform, American Legion. The service at the cemetery concluded with the firing of the salute to the dead and the blowing of taps by Bugler Paul Curtiss.
