A lifelong resident of Cascade, Md., he was born Feb. 20, 1920, to Lewis Jacob and Debbie H. Hamburgh Moore. He was the husband of Doris E. (Olsen) Moore, who preceded him in death in 2000. A lifelong resident of Cascade, Md., he was born Feb. 20, 1920, to Lewis Jacob and Debbie H. Hamburgh Moore. He was the husband of Doris E. (Olsen) Moore, who preceded him in death in 2000. Mr. Moore was a graduate of Smithsburg High School and Hagerstown Junior College. He was a self-employed carpenter, prior to and after retirement from being employed at Fort Ritchie as a carpenter and maintenance worker. He last operated the wastewater plant. He was proud of his work in helping build the Germantown Church of God in Cascade. He also did stone masonry. In World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. During basic training at Camp Blanding, Fla., he trained as an armor artificer, maintaining and repairing weapons. In August 1944, he was shipped to England, where he was retrained as an infantry rifleman before being sent to France in October 1944 as part of the 41st Armored Infantry Regiment of the 2nd Armored Division 9th Army. After arriving at the artificial harbor established at Normandy Beach, his unit crossed France and Belgium and entered Germany before he was injured by German artillery fire. He was treated at hospitals in Belgium and England before being returned to the United States. He was discharged in February 1945. Mr. Moore was an avid hiker who logged 1,577 miles of the Appalachian Trail and many miles on roads and trails in the area. He enjoyed meeting through hikers on their trek to Maine and transporting them to and from the trail to area restaurants and stores for much-needed meals and supplies. His first major hike was in 1936, when he left home to hitchhike and "ride the rails" to the World's Fair in Dallas, Texas. He also enjoyed (and will be missed) entertaining people with his harmonica while flat-footing everywhere he was seen. In his younger years, he won duckpin bowling tournaments. He was involved in the National Rifle Association and traveled to Camp Perry, Ohio, with his father, brother, Fred, and other members of the local gun club for gun matches in the 1920s and 1930s. He and his wife took months at a time traveling across the country and Canada, seeing every state in the United States and every province in Canada. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Hawaii, the 50th state. Mr. Moore was a member of Germantown Church of God. He was the last surviving charter member of Cascade American Legion Post 239. He was also a member of Eagles Club Inc., and Blue Ridge Sportsman's Association. He served as president of the Cascade Elementary School Parent-Teacher Association in the 1960s and was a life member. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three siblings, Elinor Dubner of Baltimore, Md., and Mary Anna Moore and Fred L., both of Cascade; and one daughter, Kittie S. Brown of Houston, Texas. He is survived by four children, Bonnie Hayman of Centreville, Va., Frank Moore, Jr. and wife, Judi, of Kirkland, Wash., Vicki Sanders and husband, Larry, of Cascade, and Shawn Moore and wife, Pat, of Escondido, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. A memorial service will be Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at noon at the Fort Ritchie Community Center, 14421 Lake Royer Drive, Cascade. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
