KS as that is where he had been living for several years before his death and his wife was still living there at the time of the 1940 census." From that information it is believed that Frank and Clara had divorced by 1898 and that Frank had remarried to a "Ella", but details of that need clarification. Jefferson county cemetery listings have the DOB year as 1867, so obviously there is room for variation. Will use 1867 on the memorial but with the above information and caution. It is likely that Frank died in Kansas, but needs confirmation. The obituaries did not state where he died. ----------- Fairfield Ledger February 15, 1932 HOWLETT BODY TO ARRIVE IN CITY TOMORROW NIGHT The body of Frank R. HOWLETT will arrive in Fairfield tomorrow night at 11:45 o'clock from Kansas City over the Rock Island. It will be taken to the Hoskins Funeral Home. Short funeral services will be held from the grave at 9 o'clock Wednesday morning in charge of Dr. Gilbert Voorhies. Mr. HOWLETT is well known in Fairfield having resided at one time on West Burlington street. --------- Note: Frank R. HOWLETT (born about 1867) was the first husband of Clara BOOKER HOWLETT CARPENTER HEFLIN; married on October 2, 1890 in Jefferson county, Iowa. Frank R. HOWLETT is buried at Evergreen Cemetery in 2nd.158. The Howlett family plot has one large monument with the Howlett surname, and there is only one individual headstone marker for the father of the family, Thomas R Howlett. The plots for Mrs. Thomas R Howlett (Nancy Jane Whisenand; NOT "Wissemance" as previously thought) Howlett and their son Frank R Howlett are unmarked, however. ---------- A burial permit was issued on behalf of an infant born to Frank and Clara Howlett, the infant born on May 3, 1891 and dying on May 13, 1891. Goodban & Fulton were the Undertakers of record. However, where this infant was buried was not recorded - whether it be in Old Fairfield City Cemetery or Evergreen Cemetery, both in Fairfield. ---------- Wedding of Frank R. The text is transcribed verbatim, with the note that some of the descriptions and terminology of the 1890's don't necessarily have the same meaning in the present day: The Fairfield Tribune Wednesday, October 8, 1890 Pg. 5 Col. 4 HOWLETT - BOOKER The Marrige (sic) in this City Last Thursday Night of Mr. F. R. Howlett and Miss Clara Booker. A large number of Fairfield society people both old and young were welcomed at the pleasant home of Mr. and Mrs. S. F. Booker, on the evening of Thursday, Oct. 2, the occasion being the marriage of Clara, the only remaining child at home, to Mr. Frank Howlett. The house was brilliant with the beauties of autumn foliage, and the many rich toilets seen added much to the beauty of the scene. At 8 o'clock, the old, but ever sweet strains of Medelssohn's Wedding March, played by Mr. J. E. Thomas, announced to the waiting company that the bridal party was near at hand. Mr. Trail, the best man, led the way, followed by the attendants, Mr. Frank Wells and Miss Sue Blair. Lastly came the bridal couple, who took their places directly under the beautiful floral umbrella, which hung in the northeast corner of the parlor. A bank of blooming plants made a charming back ground to the scene. A brief ceremony, pronounced by Rev Carson Reed, united the lives of the happy young pair, and then followed an avalanch of congratulations. The bride looked very beautiful in her wedding gown of white satin, cut square neck, front and back, and trimmed with white silk Vandyke points. The sleeves were short, and long white undressed kid gloves were worn. The skirt of the dress was walking length and was pleated. A large corsage bouquet of the same roses was carried. The groom wore a full suit of black and white kid gloves. The bridesmaid's gown of white satin and albatross cloth was cut decollete and the neck filled in with tulle. Long gloves of white undressed kid were worn with this toilet. An hour or more passed rapidly and very pleasantly and then all were seated to an elegant wedding supper, which was served by a corp of deft colored waiters. All expressed in in unmistakable turns their appreciation of the delicious viands. An hour or two more passed very enjoyably, and then the guests bid their adieus. The bridal couple left for Chicago on the 1225 train on the "Q" that night, and after a few days spent there, will be "At Home" to their many friends at the home of Mr. S. F. Booker, where they will board this winter. The bride, the youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. Booker, is very bright and attentive, and has by her sweet and kindly ways won for herself many friends, who will unite with those of the family in wishing her all the joy that a happy married life can bring. The groom, the only child of Mr. and Mrs. T. R. Howlett, has grown to manhood in this city, and has a great many friends, who appreciate his sterling worth and many good traits of character, and all wish him and his fair young bride much real happiness. He is a partner with his father in business and has proved himself a good business man. In the upper room of the house a large array of very elegant and useful wedding gifts in fine china, glass, silver and linen, books, rugs and furniture, was to be seen. A number of gurest from abroad were present, among them being the grandfather and grandmother of the groom, Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Whisenand, from Ottawa, Kansas; Miss Emma Howlett, Mt. Pleasant; Arthur Howlett, Omaha, Neb.; Conrad Trail and mother, St. Clairsville, Ohio; Philip Reppert and wife, Ottumwa; J.S. Ragsdale, wife and daughters, of Birmingham; Eva Sickles, of Alliance, Neb.; and Mrs. Dr. J. M. Shaffer, of Keokuk.
