For reasons that are completely unknown at this time, the official death record for Thomas R. Howlett recorded his birth as being on Sept. 21, 1831 in Illinois, and his death taking place on July 8, 1908 in Fairfield. While not unusual to have birth and death records filed some weeks after the event, to have the official death record off by that much in recording the birth and death dates is highly unusual. How this came to be will likely never be known, but it is noted here for the benefit of any family researchers. Thomas R. Howlett and Nancy Jane Whisenand were married on October 7, 1867 in Franklin county, Kansas, per Kansas marriage records. They are found in the 1900 U.S. Federal census for Fairfield, Jefferson county, Iowa as being married for 31 years, parents of one child (sic. Frank R. Howlett), so some rounding of marriage years took place in that census report.
