Read More	FRANK STANLEY PUTNAM--MONTANA PIONEER Frank Stanley Putnam was born 15 Jun 1857 in St. Anthony, MN, the youngest of 10 children, to James Baker and Climena Mae Stanley Putnam. He is listed as an infant (4/12 years old) with his father, mother and 5 siblings in the 1857 Minnesota Territorial Census. Frank Stanley had 4 older brothers who served in the Civil War: Henry Roscoe, Julian Augustus, Charles Ropes and James Edward. Henry Roscoe, his oldest brother and sibling, was 25 years older than Frank Stanley. At the end of the Civil War, Frank Stanley (nearly age 8) is listed in the 1 June 1865 Minnesota State Census in Minneapolis, MN, along with 15 other Putnams in the household (mother, siblings, aunts, uncles and cousins). It looks like this house was where the Putnam wives lived during the Civil War waiting for their husbands to return. His father, James Baker, came to Virginia City, MT, in 1862 searching for gold. His mother Climena, brother and sister Fred and Mary as well as Frank Stanley (age 11) traveled from St. Anthony, MN, to Helena, MT, in 1866 in a covered wagon to reunite with James Baker. The family then had, for a short time, a cattle ranch in the Ruby Valley near Virginia City. But the 1870 census found Frank Stanley (age 13) plus his mother, father, brother Fred and cousin Minnie Putnam (orphaned daughter of his brother Julian Augustus Putnam) living in Los Angeles, CA, next door to his much-older brother Henry Roscoe Putnam and his wife & 3 children. This Putnam clan had moved to California because of Henry Roscoe's poor health. Henry Roscoe needed to be in a warm climate because of his Civil War illnesses. This group of Putnams--including Frank Stanley--moved back to MT after just a few years, where both his brother, Henry Roscoe, and father, James Baker, died in Helena in 1872 and 1873. He married Sallie Lenore Austin, who also came to Montana in a covered wagon, on 31 Jul 1881, at Jefferson City, Montana (near Helena). Frank Stanley--along with his mother and several close-to-his-age siblings--settled in Jefferson City until 1899 when he and his brother Fred filed and were granted mining claims near Neihart, MT. In the 1900 census he and Sallie and 3 children are listed as residing in Neihart. In 1909, Frank Stanley moved for the last time, to Edgar, MT, where he bought a small farm with an apple orchard. He's listed there in the 1910, 1920 and 1930 censuses. He and Sallie celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1931 with a large family reunion and re-enactment of their wedding vows. Details of this celebration are reported in the Billings Gazette newspaper. Frank Stanley Putnam died 16 June 1938, one day after his 81st birthday. He is buried in the Rockvale Cemetery, directly across the road from the small farm and orchard where he spent the last 29 years of his life as a "gentleman farmer". His wife Sallie died the next month, on 29 July 1938 and is buried next to Frank Stanley Putnam in the Rockvale Cemetery.
