Smith, 1889), Climena Mae Stanley's family were neighbors to the Joshua Putnam family. James Baker was 23 and Climena 19 when married. The 1840 Census shows James Baker and Climena living in Aroostook County, Maine, with 3 children: Henry Roscoe, Julian Augustus and Charles Ropes. James Baker works as a carpenter. By the 1850 Census, the family had moved to Hopkinton, Massachusetts, and added 3 more children: Sarah Elizabeth, James Edward and Mary Emma. James Baker works as a carpenter and his 18-year-old son Henry Roscoe is a bootmaker. John Stanly [Stanley], age 20, perhaps a brother or nephew of Climena's, also lives with the family and works as a bootmaker. Fred Lee Putnam was born in Massachusetts in 1853. In 1854, the family headed west, moving to St. Anthony, Minnesota. Here, another child was born. James Baker and Climena were 50 and 46 years old when Frank Stanley Putnam, their youngest son and Larry Putnam's great grandfather, was born. In 1862, James Baker was drawn even further west to the gold mining camp of Nevada City, Montana Territory. He worked as a miner and found some gold. On 2 Dec 1864, he wrote Climena back in St. Anthony that he'd sent her $233.30 in gold and was impressed with the beautiful, fertile valleys and fat beef in Montana. He voted in a special election to establish Montana as a Territory on 24 Oct 1864. In 1866, Climena and the 3 youngest children (Mary Emma, Fred and Frank Stanley) traveled from St. Anthony to Helena by covered wagon to reunite the family. The 100-wagon train, led by Captain Holmes, took 3 months to reach Helena at 5 to 10 miles per day. From Helena, the family went to the Ruby Valley near Virginia City where James Baker had built a ranch house. After three years, they moved to Los Angeles, California, where James Baker bought a 100-acre farm. But drought conditions in California drove them back to Montana where they settled in Jefferson City (near Helena). Their oldest son Henry Roscoe and his family lived next door to them in Los Angeles, although H. R. was in poor health. Shortly after returning to Jefferson City, Montana, James Baker Putnam died on 10 Feb 1873 at the age of 65. His oldest son H. R. Putnam had died almost exactly one year earlier (12 Feb 1872) in Helena, and both are buried in the old Benton Avenue Cemetery in Helena, one of the oldest in Montana.
