They had six children: Herman, William, Anna, Hannah, Emma, and Louise. Dirk Becher died September 4, 1937. Fred Becher received his early education as well as his instruction in the art of farming in Platte County. On April 16, 1906, he married Frieda R, Hellbusch, daughter of John F. and Elisa Anna Wilke Hellbusch. The Bechers have four children: Elsie, born January 26, 1907; Edgar, born September 25, 1909; Carrol, born December 7, 1914; and Bruno, born December 7, 1918. They all attended St. John's Lutheran School. Mr. Becher is engaged in farming in Grand Prairie Township, the occupation he has followed most of his life. He is a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. ---------------------------- The Columbus Telegram, February 4, 1976 BECHER - Fred Becher, 93, a retired farmer who lived at 1860 24th Avenue, died Tuesday afternoon in Behlen Community Hospital. His funeral will be Friday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 12:45 p.m. family prayer service and 1 p.m. funeral rites, with Rev. B.F. Meschke officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The body will lie in state, 1 p.m. Thursday until 11 a.m. Friday at Gass-Haney Funeral Home; 12-1 p.m. Friday at the church. Lifetime resident of Platte County, he was born Sept. 25, 1882 to D.A. and Anna (Folken) Becher and attended District 77 and St. John Schools. He married Frieda Hellbusch on April 16, 1906 at St. John Lutheran Church, rural Columbus. They farmed north of Columbus until retiring to town in 1950. He was active in church affairs at St. John and later at Immanuel Lutheran. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Arthur (Elsie) Franzen of Columbus; three sons, Edgar and Bruno of Columbus, Carrol of Humphrey; two sisters, Mrs. Hannah Kapels of Creston, Mrs. J.R. (Louise) Prest of Columbus; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Aug. 27, 1969; four brothers, John, Dick, Herman and William; three sisters, Mrs. William (Hannah) Inselman, Mrs. Fred (Emma) Bargmann and infant Anna Becher.
