The body now lies in state at Gass-Haney Funeral Home, and will lie in state at the church Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to the time of service. Mr. Becher died Saturday at Newman Grove Community Hospital, where he had been a week. He was born March 15, 1889, in Grand Prairie Township, the son of Dietrich and Catherine G. Johannes Becher, and attended St. John Lutheran School. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John Church by the Rev. E. Holm. On Aril 17, 1913, Mr. Becher and Olga Depe were married at St. John Church by Pastor Holm. They farmed north of [photo of Herman Becher] Columbus until 1936, spent two years in Creston, then moved to Columbus. Mrs. Becher died March 8, 1965. Mr. Becher had resided in Newman Grove's mid-Nebraska Lutheran Home since 1967. Mr. Becher served as director of the District 77 school board for 15 years, and was Grand Prairie township treasurer for two terms. In 1930, he was elected to the Platte County Board of Supervisors for District 1. Re-elected in 1934, he served until 1938, when he resigned to become WPA project superintendent of Platte and Colfax Counties. After the program was discontinued, he served as Civilian Auxiliary to the Military Police at the Cornhusker Ordnance Plant, 1940-42. From 1943-48 Mr. Becher operated a service station here. He joined the Columbus Police Department in 1949, serving until retirement at age 70, in 1959. He is survived by three sons, Harry L. of Brownsville, Tex., A. Walter of Newman Grove and D. Albert of Cody, Wyo.; five daughters, Mrs. Godfrey (Lorena) Ditter of Monroe, Mrs. Keith (Marie) Rush of Seward, Mrs. Duane (Alyce) Ernst and Mrs. William (Edythe) Bembry of Columbus, and Mrs. Glenn (Florence) Konrady of Ida Grove, Iowa. Other survivors are 27 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; one brother, Fred of Columbus; and three sisters, Mrs. Hannah Kapels of Creston, Mrs. Fred (Emma) Bargmann and Mrs. J.R. (Louise) Prest of Columbus. Mr. Becher was preceded in death by his wife; son, Milton E. in 1955; one grandson, Tommy; his parents; three brothers, Dick, John and William Becher; and one sister, Mrs. William (Annie) Inselman. The family suggests that memorials be directed to Peace Lutheran Building Fund, Daily Devotions, or Mid-Nebraska Lutheran Home.
