The Evening Call, Saturday, June 1, 1901, page 3: DIES IN A CHAIR Fred Gerber Expires While Sitting in a Chair at Fred Evans' Saloon Last Evening Shortly before 6 o'clock last evening, Fred Gerber walked into Fred Evans' Saloon and after taking a drink walked to a chair and sat down. He showed himself to have been under the influence of liquor to such an extent that when he was invited to the bar, Mr. Evans suggested to him that he had enough. This was the last scene in the unfortunate man's life as he sat next to a table by the wall and without uttering a word or a sigh or moving a muscle apparently, his life flitted away and a few moments later his color attracted the attention of a bystander, and his death was discovered. The coroner was sent for, but on account of being absent on professional business was not found and Judge Walsh was called in and took charge. J.L. Marcoux was given charge of the remains which were taken to his undertaking rooms and prepared for interment. Coroner Zerfing decided that there was no question about the cause of death and no call for coroner's inquest. Fred Gerber had not an enemy on earth except himself. He was an old-timer here and has been in the employ of the company for twenty years and always held a position of trust. He was last employed as car oiler in the mines and usually assisted at the assay office during bullion days. But he seemed to be so thoroughly under control of liquor that he was willing to sacrifice everyting on earth for the sake of drink and his constitution was gradually undermined with the natural result. He leaves a wife and son at Columbus, Nebraska. George Geir, of this city, is a nephew by marriage and Mrs. Thomas Gregory is a distant relative, not, however, a niece, as is generally supposed.. The wife and son were telegraphed of the sad ending and in reply requested Mr. Geis to make all arrangements, but that it would be impossible for them to attend. Mr. Geis has sent word to his parents, who are sixty miles from railroad and can hardly reach here in time for the funeral. Deceased was a member in good standing of the Lead City Miners' Union, who will doubtless have charge of the funeral. The funeral will take place at 2:30 tomorrow afternoon from the M.E. church under the auspices oft he Lead City Miners' Union. Rev. Mahood will preach the sermon and J.L. Marcoux will conduct the funeral. The Evening Call, Monday, June 3, 1901, page 3: Fred Gerber's Funeral The funeral rites over the remains of Fred Gerber who died while sitting in a chair Friday night, were held yesterday afternoon. The funeral was under the auspices of the Lead City Miners' Union, of which body the deceased was a member in good standing. Rev. Mahood delivered a very fitting and eloquent eulogy over the remains. Interment was had in the South Lead cemetery. Thus ends the history of one who spent half a lifetime in Lead. Lead Daily Pioneer-Times, Tuesday, June 4, 1901, page 1: The funeral of Fred Gerber was held Sunday afternoon under the auspices of the Lead City Miners' union. The interment as in the South Lead cemetery, and was largely attended. None of the relatives of the deceased arrived in time to attend the funeral. Lead Daily Tribune (Lead, South Dakota), Saturday, June 1, 1901, page 3: DIED IN A SALOON Fred Gurber (sic) After A Protracted Spree Dies In Fred Evans Saloon Four or five weeks continuous drinking, with no sleep or food for the last two weeks, was too much for Fred Gurber. While standing at the bar of Fred Evans' saloon, he began to shake as with the ague and one of the drinkers conducted him to a chair across the room. he was not more than seated in the chair when the head fell back, and the man was dead. He was 50 years of age. About a month ago Gurber drew his pay from the Homestake company and sent part of it to his wife who is at present in Columbus, Neb., since then he has been drunk most of the time and worked very little, although he has some time at the Homestake for work done this month. As soon as the man had sunk into unconsciousness doctors were sent for and Dr. Tower of the Homestake hospital answered the summons. Upon investigation he pronounced Gurber dead several minutes before his arrival. The sudden death was soon heard of along Main street and in a very few minutes the saloon was crowded with curious people who wished to see the dead man. Finally the bystanders became so numerous that Judge Walsh ordered the body taken to Marcoux's undertaking parlors, where Coroner Zerfing could hold an inquest if he deemed it necessary. Upon hearing the particulars it as decided that no inquest was necessary. Mrs. Gurber was telegraphed last night of the sudden demise of her husband but at time of writing no word has been received from her. The funeral arrangements will not be made until some member of the family makes reply. Deceased leaves his family well provided for. Besides a good ranch near Columbus, Nebraska, he has some life insurance and a little money in wages due from the Homestake company. LATER - Mr. Gurber will be buried from the M.E. church tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock under the auspices of the Lead City Miners' Union, Rev. Mahood officiating. The telegram from Mrs. Gurber today stated neither she or the rest of the family could come to Lead and the Miners' Union took charge of the remains. The Miners' Union was well represented, and did their part of the last rites with due honor.
