He was born in Buffalo, N.Y. on July 26, 1925, to Fred and Mary Francis (Carter) Hazelwood. He lived there until 1938 when he moved to Rochester, N.Y. In 1940, his family moved to Washington, DC, settled in Chevy Chase, Md. and Fred graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1943. He enrolled in Penn State College in June 1943 and enlisted in the U.S. Army in July, 1943. He served for three years in the 87th Infantry Division (Golden Acorn division), 345th Infantry Regiment, Headquarters Company. He was awarded the Bronze Star. He returned to Penn State and graduated in 1949 from the School of Agriculture. While in Penn State he was an active member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. In addition to his love of singing Fred played the trombone in three different bands during his early adult years, the army band, the Penn State Blue Band and the Redskins Band. Fred worked for Borden Co., Swift Premium and in 1963, moved to Washington, DC, to work for the USDA in the Office of the Secretary of Agriculture. He retired in 1980. He moved to Scarborough in February of 2000. Fred married Esther Andersen in September 1951, in Boston, Mass. and raised four children. Fred dedicated his life to his family and, in addition, contributed 66 years of faithful service to the Boy Scouts of America. He was very proud of being an eagle scout. He founded and was scoutmaster of Troop 987 in Vienna, Va., which continues today. Because of his years of hard work and dedication as a District Commissioner in the National Capital Area Council, he received the Silver Beaver Award, The Distinguished Award of Merit and the Distinguished Commissioner's Award. His many other contributions to the BSA and to all of the lives he touched are numerous and unforgettable. Fred is survived by his wife of 52 years, Esther; his son, Fred (Pat) of Virginia Beach, Va.; his daughter, Ann (Steve) Hazelwood Guthrie of Charlevoix, Mich.; his son, Brian (Jennifer) of Scarborough; his daughter, Karen (Rick) Thomas of Richmond, Va.; and his 11 grandchildren. In addition, his sister, Fay (Ole) Olson of Rochester, N.Y. and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Frances Hazelwood. A memorial service is planned for December 27, at 11 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church, 132 Auburn Street, Portland, Maine.
