Mr. Shoffner was born March 1, 1921, a son of Cyrus and Julia Smith Shoffner. A native of Liberty, he graduated from Liberty High School in 1939 and went on to Elon College where he graduated majoring in history. He attended the University of New Mexico for graduate work and earned two masters degrees, one in history and another in education administration. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, national honorary educational fraternity, Phi Alpha Theta, national honorary historical fraternity, and Sigma Phi Beta, national social fraternity. He was active in the American Legion in Liberty, having served in the US Army Air Force, 1942-46, as a Radio Operator and Mechanics Instructor with the Air Force Technical Command. A member of First United Methodist Church in Liberty, he served on the Administrative Council, taught in the Church school and was a member of the Scholarship Committee of the Young Men's Bible class. He was also a member of United Methodist Men, of which he was a past president. Mr. Shoffner was an active member of the Liberty Rotary Club, which honored him with the Paul Harris Fellow award of Rotary International. He was president of the Liberty club from 1977-79, and of the Farmington, New Mexico club 1963-64. Mr. Shoffner retired in 1985 as Associate superintendent of the Randolph County School System. Among his professional activities, he was a member of local, state, and national education Associations. He served on the National Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, and was a member of the Division of Superintendents of North Carolina Association of Educators. In addition to membership in county, state and national Association of Educators and Educational Administrators, he was a member of the Randolph County Mental Health Association and the N.C. Zoo Society. Survivors include his wife, Frances Hope Pugh Shoffner; daughter, Catherine Shoffner; two sons, Larry and John Shoffner; and brother, Henry C. Shoffner of Liberty. The family will receive friends at the Loflin Funeral Home in Liberty Monday, Aug. 3, from 7-9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be directed to the First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 220, Liberty, NC 27298, Hospice of Randolph County, 411 Vision Dr., P.O. Box 9, Asheboro, NC 27204; or the Liberty Public Library, 239 W. Swannanoa Ave., Liberty, NC 27298.
