Derby, owner of the Derby Grain Company of Topeka, was born near Lawrence in Douglas County, Kansas, Jan. 26, 1870, the son of Fred A. and Clara H. (White) Derby. His father was a farmer of that community. Mr. Derby was educated in the rural schools of Douglas County and at Lane Univ. at Lecompton, which he attended from 1886 to 1889. He farmed in 1891-92 and the following year entered the general merchandise business and operated a store at Belvoir, in Douglas County. He then was proprietor of a store at Denison until 1897, when he entered the grain business at Armour, Neb. In 1900 he moved to Sabetha, Kan., and organized the Derby Grain Company. He remained at Sabetha until 1914 when he moved to Topeka, where the offices of the Derby Grain Company have since been maintained. The company operates a line of elevators in northern Kansas and southern Nebraska, and a large portion of the business consists of buying and selling grain. Mr. Derby also operates a considerable amount of western farm land, growing wheat on an extensive scale in Sherman and Kearney counties. Mr. Derby is vice-president of the National Grain Dealers Ass'n; has been a director of the Grain Dealers Mutual Fire Insurance Company since 1919, and is a former president of the Kansas Grain Dealers Ass'n. He was one of the organizers and original directors of the Topeka Flour Mills Company, organized in 1915, and is vice president and a director of the Kansan Hotel Company and a director of the Morris Plan Company. He is a state committeeman and a former president of the State YMCA and a past director of the Central YMCA of Topeka. He is a member and past president of the Topeka Rotary Club and a member of the Topeka Country Club and First Presbyterian Church. In the World War, he served with the YMCA as business manager at St. Nazaire, France, from Aug. 17, 1918, to March, 1919, handling canteen supplies from the warehouse for that area.
