Read More	Cherokee Sentinel, Nov. 24, 1893, page 2: Obituary Frederick Augustus Purdum was born in McDonough county, Ill, January 18, 1868, and came to Kansas when about seven years old, where he has lived until the Master said, "It is enough, come up higher," and he willingly obeyed Monday morning, at 5 o'clock, Nov. 20, 1893, after suffering intensely for five weary weeks. Fred, as he was always called, had educated himself to teach and had begun his third school in district 64. He received the principal part of his education in the Base Line school, near his home. He was a scholar in the Cherokee school for some time, after which he went to Emporia, and from there to Ft. Scott. His motto was "Onward and Upward," and his watchword "Right." He signed the temperance pledge when but a boy, and when 18 years old was converted and joined the M.E. church at Cherokee and has ever since been steadfast and true. He had a dear little brother over there to greet him, and he leaves a broken-hearted father and mother, two sisters and a brother to follow him. He was remarkably patient during his suffering and when at last the reaper, Death, came with his sickle he yielded without a struggle and the full blown flower of that family was transplanted to the fields of light above. The funeral services were held at his home by Rev. Volnar and Cullison, and the remains laid to rest in the Cherokee cemetery. (Thanks to Cheryl White for the transcription)
