Frederick Howe Sr. was the third of their five children. -------------------------------- Frederick Howe [Sr.] was married on March 12, 1812 in Leyden, Franklin Co. Massachusetts, to Polly Bliss, the daughter of Peter Bliss Sr. and his wife Mary "Molly" Perry. ------------------------------ Frederick Howe Sr. and Polly then moved with his parents from Leyden, Franklin County Massachusetts, to Truxton, Cortland County New York later in 1812. ---- Note: Polly's "Bliss" family also moved to Truxton, Cortland County New York. ------------------------------ Frederick Sr. and Polly had 12 children, all born in Cortland County New York (listed under his wife Polly Howe). ------------------------------- After two previous exploring trips on horseback through the West (and after the death of his father), Frederick Howe Sr. brought his family to Bertrand Township, South of Buchanan, Berrien County Michigan in two "Prairie Schooner" covered wagons, including his wife Polly, his mother Joanna, eleven of his twelve children, an "indentured servant boy" named Justice Bailey (who later married his daughter Lucinda), and a small herd of cattle. (Two of the boys rode on horseback). The illness and death of his father had delayed their trip. ----------------------------- In April of 1835, they left Truxton, Cortland County New York, and they arrived in Bertrand Township, Berrien County Michigan the day before Thanksgiving in November of 1836 (per: "The Story of Portage Prairie", by Alma V. Hartline, page 88). Note: Some history books state that they came to Michigan in 1835. An article by their granddaughter Lulu Charlotte (Howe) Treat, also states that they came to MI in 1835. ------------------------------ Note: Polly's parents and six of her siblings are buried in the "Truxton Rural Cemetery", in Truxton, Cortland County New York, along with Frederick Howe's father Antipass Howe. ----------------------------------- Frederick Sr. had cut the legs off of the chair for his 89 year old mother Joanna, so that it would fit under the canvas roof of one of the two covered wagons that they used to come West. -------------------------------- Frederick Howe Sr. purchased the claim of Samuel Cannon of 160 acres. It contained a one-room cabin made of logs chinked with plaster. --------------------------------- Frederick later purchased additional land, until at the time of his death, the homestead consisted of 240 acres. ------------------------------- When they arrived in Bertrand Township, the doors and windows of the cabin were missing. ------------------------------- Frederick Sr. had arranged to have a box of window sashs, some heavier farm equipment, and some furnishings shipped from Cortland County New York, by water, via the Great Lakes to St. Joseph, MI and thence up the St. Joseph river to Niles, Michigan by steamboat. According to the "Genealogy of The Bliss Family In America", (which is listed at the bottom of Polly's memorial), Polly's brother Leonard Bliss invented and manafactured the first machine for making window sashes. Frederick Sr. made a door from some boards he obtained at a saw mill at McCoy's Creek (now Buchanan, MI). -------------------------------- Their farm was in Section 11 and in Section 12 (where this cemetery is located). --------------------------------- Bertrand township was organized in 1836. Frederick Howe Sr. helped set the boundaries of Bertrand township, (and they were approved by the "Michigan Territory" Legislature in 1836). He was elected the first Township Supervisor at the first township election which was held at Union Hall in the village of Bertrand in April of 1836, which he held for several years. In 1839 (while he was Supervisor), he was appointed to the building committee, when the Berrien County Court House was erected in Berrien Springs. He served as a trustee for the Berrien County Poor Farm. He also served on a committee which organized the Masonic Lodge in Buchanan (which received it's charter in 1854). ------------------------------- Frederick Howe Sr. and his wife Polly (Bliss) Howe donated five acres for the Howe cemetery, which was originally part of their farm. ------------------------------- Frederick Sr.'s mother Joanna Howe, was the first person buried here in 1838. ------------------------------- They also donated the land for the Howe school house, located just down the road. Frederick Sr. and his two eldest sons, also helped to build this school house. --- On page 96, of "The Story of Portage Prairie", by Alma Vite Hartline, is an article written by Mrs. Lou Treat (Mrs. Lulu Charlotte (Howe) Treat), a granddaughter of Frederick and Polly Howe. It states: "The first Howe school was built on the Southwest corner of the Buffalo Road- Buchanan Road crossing, in 1836. It was a log building erected by Frederick Howe and his sons soon after they came in the fall of 1835. It was used for a few years, and then a frame building was put up, and it was used until the brick school- house was put up in 1860 [or 1877-1878 per newspaper article below]. Frederick also gave much of the timber from his forest, close by, as well as the labor of himself and his two older sons, and he had a log cabin school house erected and ready for use for a summer term of school in 1836. His second [19-year-old] daughter was the first school teacher". --- Note: See information by Lulu (Howe) Treat (daughter of Charles F. History of the Howe School and the Bertrand area, prepared by Mrs. Lulu (Howe) Treat, for the June 18, 1950 Howe School Reunion. ------------------------------- The old "wooden" school house was later replaced with a new "brick" school house in 1877-78 (per article in the "Berrien County Record" newspaper, in Buchanan, Michigan, on Jan. 3, 1878, page 3, column 3), which reads as follows: --- NEW SCHOOL HOUSE - We notice a new Brick School House is nearly completed in the "Howe District," a few miles South of Buchanan. This building is a decided improvement on the old dilapidated superstructure, its predecessor, which stood on the "corner" so many years. -------------------------------- In the winter of 1836-37 Frederick Sr.'s daughter Lucinda Howe taught at the first school for the wage of $2.50 a week. -------------------------------- The following summer, another daughter Mary Howe, taught in a log school, on what was later the Peter Womer farm. -------------------------------- The Buchanan Masonic Lodge No. 68, F. & A. M. was formed on January 27, 1853, with F. Howe as a Charter Member. --------------------------------- Frederick Sr.'s granddaughter Lillie Belle Howe, (the daughter of Hezekiah Joshua ("H. J.") Howe), was the Valedictorian of the very first Buchanan High School graduating class in 1877. ---------------------------------- Later in life (in 1859), Frederick Sr. built a large eleven room brick home in the village of Buchanan, MI (just South of the M.C. railroad tracks, near the train depot) He moved there in 1860, where he died four years later. --- Frederick also built a home for his daughter Lucinda Bailey (after her husband was presumed dead), kiddy- corner from the train depot. ----------------------------------- Frederick Howe Sr. died at the age of 76 years. ------------------------------- His headstone reads: OUR FATHER FREDERICK HOWE DIED FEB. 18, 1864 AGED 76 YEARS ------------ Photo of Frederick Howe Sr.'s headstone, is courtesy of Spencer Miller. ----------------------------- Note: An article on Frederick Howe Sr. was published in the "Berrien County Record" newspaper in Buchanan, MI on Oct. 30, 1952, under the title of "The Story of Buchanan". (These articles were later made into a book). ------------------------------- Note: An article published in the "Berrien County Record" newspaper in Buchanan, MI on Nov. 20, 1952, concerns a letter to the publisher from Frederick Howe Sr.'s Gt. Gt. Grandson, Chas. E. Roe. Part of the article states: ---- Frederick Howe Sr. is a descendant of John Howe, of Sudbury, Mass. John Howe's grandson David Howe built the Red Horse Tavern at Sudbury, Mass. which was the subject of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's famous poem, "Tales of a Wayside Inn". The Red Horse Tavern was later purchased and restored by Henry Ford (of Detroit, Michigan). -------------------------------- Note: There is a Prudence Howe, b. in Cortland County New York, about 1817, who married Abram W. Arnold there in 1835. Their son Edwin John was married to Carolyn Julia Brown in 1863, in Edwardsburg, MI. Their son Uriah Arnold married Phebe A. Alexander in Niles, MI. Prudence died in Cass Co. Michigan and is buried along with these sons, in the Edwardsburg [MI] Cemetery.
