She was 31 years old when the Declaration of Independence was written. ------------------------------- Joanna was married on Jan. 20, 1782 to Antipass Howe, the son of Isaac Howe (b. Feb. 8, 1708), and his wife Prudence (Howe) Howe, (b. Nov. 3, 1714), of (Marlborough, in Middlesex County, and Leicester and Paxton, in Worcester County), Massachusetts. Prudence Howe was the daughter of Jonathan Howe and his wife Lydia Brigham. ------------------------------------- Antipass Howe was born on Aug. 19, 1746 in Paxton, Worcester Co. Massachusetts. (They moved to Truxton, in Cortland, County New York in 1812). Antipass Howe died near Truxton, Cortland County New York in March of 1833, at the age of 86. Antipass Howe is buried in the Truxton Rural Cemetery, in Truxton, Cortland County New York (along with members of the Bliss family, of his daughter-in-law Polly (Bliss) Howe). --- Note: On Joanna's headstone, her husband's name is spelled "ANTIPASS". (Click on her headstone for an enlargement). ---------------------------------- After Joanna and Antipass were married, they lived a few years in Swanzey, Cheshire Co. New Hampshire, where their first two children were born, then they moved to Shutesbury, Franklin County Massachusetts. ------------------------------- In 1812, they moved with their son Frederick Howe Sr. and his wife Polly (Bliss) Howe, to Truxton, in Cortland County New York, where Joanna's husband Antipass Howe died in March of 1833. --------------------------------- Antipass was a farmer, and he was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. ---------------------------------- Joanna and Antipass Howe had five children: -------------- 1. Isaac Howe. (Possibly named after Antipass's father). b. Jan. 21, 1783, in Swanzey, Cheshire Co. New Hampshire. [He "possibly" married Sarah Zatley, and he "possibly" died in 1837, in Elkhart, Indiana]. --------------------------------- 2. Joshua Howe. (Possibly named after Joanna's father). b. March 17, 1785, in Swnazey, Cheshire Co. New Hampshire. [He "possibly" married Rosanna unknown, and he "possibly" died in 1885, in Leyden, Massachusetts]. --------------------------------- 3. Frederick Howe [Sr.] b. Feb. 6, 1788, in Shutesbury, Franklin Co. Massachusetts. m. March 12, 1812 in Leyden, Mass., to Polly Bliss, the daughter of Peter Bliss Sr. and Mary "Molly" Perry. d. Feb. 18, 1866, in Buchanan, Berrien County Michigan. Buried: Howe Cemetery (on land he once owned). ---------------------------------- 4. Francis Howe. b. Feb. 19, 1791 in Mass. -------------------------------- 5. Prudence Howe. (Possibly named after Antipass's mother). b. in Mass. or New York. ____________________________________ After the death of her husband Antipass, in 1833, Joanna moved with her son Frederick Howe Sr. and his wife Polly, and family to Bertrand Township, South of Buchanan, Berrien County Michigan, in 1835 (when Joanna was about 90 years old). --------------------------------- Her son had cut the bottom of the legs of her chair off, so that it would fit under the canvas roof of one of the two covered wagons they used to come West. --------------------------------- Joanna died three years later, at the age of 93. Joanna died in Bertrand "township", South of Buchanan, Berrien County Michigan. ------------------------------- Her headstone has a weeping willow at the top, and it reads: JOANNA Wife of ANTIPASS HOWE DIED OCT. 11, 1838 Aged 93 Years ------------------------------- Photo of Joanna's headstone, is courtesy of Spencer Miller. ------------------------------- Joanna was the first person to be buried here on her son's farm (in 1838), this portion would later became known as the "Howe Cemetery".
