Edward DeMont died Jan. 5, 1851, at the age of 30 years. ---------------------------------- Children of Edward DeMont and his wife Mary Howe are: ----------------------- 1. Richard A. DeMont (In Civil War). (The Sheriff of Berrien County MI for four years, from 1877 to 1880, and later a stockbroker, and a lumberman.) b. 1841. m. Mary E. (nicknamed "Belle") Wynn, the daughter of Morgan Wynn and Elizabeth Jane Cottrell. They had a daughter named Adeline "Addie"(Mrs. Howard Ewalt), and an adopted daughter named Bessie (who married Harry Higgins Sr.). Richard lived in Oronoko Township, in Berrien Springs, MI in 1880, and is listed as the Sheriff. His step-father James Smith Sr., age 66, is listed as the "Jailer". He served as the Sheriff of Berrien County Michigan for four years, from 1877 to 1880. He was living in South Bend, Indiana in 1884, and is listed as a stockbroker. He later lived in Paoli, near (the resort towns of) French Lick and West Baden Springs, in Orange County, Indiana. He served in the 12th Michigan Infantry, Company C, and Company H, in the Civil War. He enlisted on Dec. 19, 1861. Was promoted to Full Aide-de-Camp. He was promoted to Full 2nd Lieutenant on Oct. 1, 1862. He was promoted to Full 1st Lieutenant on March 19, 1864. He was promoted to Full Captain on June 9, 1864. He mustered out on Nov. 15, 1864. In 1867 Richard A. DeMont was appointed as the guardian for Morgan Wynn, the son of Elizabeth J. Wynn. (Guardianship papers located at the Berrien County Historical Association). Richard A. DeMont died in 1912, at the age of 71. He is buried with his wife, in the Ames Chapel Cemetery, which is located 2 and 1/2 miles East of West Baden Springs, on State Road 150, in French Lick Township, Orange County Indiana. ----------------------------------- 2. Frederick "Fred" George DeMont. (Listed as "George", in the obituary for his step-father James Smith Sr.). b. about 1844. m. # 1. Amelia Meekes on May 15, 1863 in Berrien County Michigan. m. # 2. Sattie E. Unknown. He lived in South Bend, IN in 1880. He lived in Red Bluff, Butts County California in 1884. ------------------------------------ 3. Florence Adelia DeMont. b. 1849. m. # 1. Dec. 19, 1866 to Nelson Havens in Berrien County Michigan. In the 1880 census, they are living in Hager township, Berrien County Michigan, with Lottie DeMont, age 16. They lived in Berrien Co. MI in 1884. m. # 2. June 20, 1896, in St. Joseph, Berrien County Michigan, to John Nelson Rosa, the son of Abram Rosa and his wife Hattie Emmerson. John was age 22 (born March 21, 1875), and Florence was age 46. In the 1900 census they are living in Hager township, Berrien County Michigan, with Florence's daughter Mary Havens. Florence states that she gave birth to two children, only one (Mary) still living. In the 1910 census, Florence is living in Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County Michigan with her daughter Mary, and son-in-law Spencer V. Barnum (whom Mary married on Sept. 5, 1906). Florence died on Dec. 29 1911. Florence is buried in the Coloma Cemetery, in Coloma Berrien County Michigan. Her second husband John died in 1951, and he is buried in the Harris Cemetery, in Lake Michigan Beach, Berrien Co. Michigan. ______________________________________ (Edward DeMont died on Jan. 5, 1851, at the age of 30 years). ______________________________________ m. # 2. James Smith Sr., (a Civil War Veteran), on March 31, 1852, in Howard (Township), Cass County Michigan, by Isaiah Carbury [Carberry], Justice of the Peace. (James age 36 of Buchanan Township, and Mary age 32 of Bertrand Township). (Marriage Record Number B2-220). ------------------------------------ James Smith Sr. was born Aug. 25, 1814, in Deposit, Delaware County New York State (per his obit). Note: James Smith [Sr.] had also been married once before, in New York State, to Sally (also known as "Sarah") E. Carroll, and had six children from his first marriage (per James Smith's obit). James Smith Sr. is buried in the Bakertown Cemetery next to his first wife Sally/Sarah E. (Carroll) Smith. ------------------------------------ The 1860 census shows James and Mary Smith living in Bertrand township, South of Buchanan, Berrien County Michigan, along with Mary's daughter Florence DeMont age 11, and James's son Howard F. Smith age 16. ----------------------------------- Note: The 1860 census also shows Mary's son Fred DeMont age 16, living with Mary's brother Frederick Alonzo Howe and his wife Sarah, and James's youngest child Nancy Smith age 15, is living with Mary's brother Francis Willard Howe and his wife Hannah. Another daughter of James's, Mary Ellen Smith age 17, was living with her Aunt Sally and Sally's second husband Abram Hoag. ---------------------------------- The 1870 census shows James and Mary Smith living between Mary's two sons Richard and Frank (Fred) DeMont in the Village of Buchanan, Berrien Co. MI ------------------------------------ The 1880 census shows James and Mary Smith living in Oronoko Township, [Berrien Springs] Berrien County Michigan (in the Sheriff's residence, next to the 1839 courthouse), with Mary's eldest son Richard A. DeMont. Richard A. DeMont is listed as the Sheriff (of Berrien County Michigan), and his step-father (Mary's second husband) James Smith Sr., age 66, is listed as the "Jailer". --- Note: Mary's son Richard A. DeMont served as the Sheriff of Berrien County MI for four years, from 1877 to 1880. He also served as the Marshall of Buchanan, MI in the 1870's. ----------------------------------- James and Mary Smith later lived in South Bend, St. Joseph Co. Indiana, (next door to Mary's son Richard DeMont), at the time of Mary's death in 1884. ----------------------------------- Mary's obituary was published in the "Berrien County Record", in Buchanan, Michigan. It reads: -------------------- MRS. MARY SMITH, wife of James Smith [Sr.], sister of C. F. [Charles Franklin] and H. J. [Hezekiah Joshua] Howe, died at the home of her son, R. A. [Richard A.] DeMont, in South Bend, [Indiana] on Wednesday, Dec. 24 [1884]. The remains were broght to the Howe cemetery for interment. A number from this place attended the funeral, which was held at the residence of C. F. [Charles Franklin] Howe, in Bertrand township, [Berrien Co. MI] Sunday. ------------------------------------- Note: Mary's brother Charles Franklin Howe lived on the old homestead of his parents, where Mary had grown up, which is where her funeral was held. --------------------------------- Another Obituary for Mary was published in "The St. Joseph Valley Weekly Register" in South Bend, Indiana, on Dec. 31, 1884, which states in part: ---------------- Mary died at the home of her son Richard A. DeMont, on the corner of Jefferson and William Street, [in South Bend, IN], in the 65th year of her age. ---------------------------------- Note: Mary died at the age of 64. ---------------------------------- Mary is buried next to her first husband Edward DeMont in the Howe Cemetery. They share a headstone. Mary's side of the headstone reads: MARY D. SMITH, DIED DEC. 24, 1884, AGE 64 YRS. ------------------------------ Note: The James Smith that is buried in the Howe cemetery, is NOT the same James Smith that Mary was married to. The James Smith [Sr.] that Mary was married to, was born in 1814, in Deposit, Delaware County New York. The James Smith [Sr.] that Mary was married to is listed in the 1850 census of Bertrand Township, Berrien County Michigan with 5 children, and no wife. Mary married James Smith [Sr.] on March 31, 1852. ------------------------------------ Mary's second husband James Smith [Sr.], is buried in the Bakertown Cemetery, next to his first wife Sally/Sarah E.
