Best Dies After Long Illness Fred J. Best, resident of Lead and Homestake employee for the past 28 years, died at the family residence, 519 Washington street, at 4 o'clock Sunday morning. His illness dated from November 8, but he had apparently been improving and his death was entirely unexpected. He had been up and about the house Saturday but took a relapse at 10:30 p.m. He was born August 2, 1902 in Whitewood where he received his education and grew to manhood. Before coming to Lead he railroaded for a time. He had been in the employ of the Homestake Mining Company since 1920. He was married to Margaret Black of Lead on September 3, 1926, and the couple had three children. They are T/5 Fred Best, who returned from Bamberg, Germany, March 14, and two small daughters, Peggy Lou and Beth Ann. Other survivors include his mother, Mrs. Louis Kriniger of Belle Fourche, a brother, Walter of Rapid City, and four sisters living at distant points who are Mrs. E.P. Stearns, Mrs. Guy Montgomery, Mrs. Alva Smith and Mrs. Frank Baldwin. A Presbyterian by faith services are set for 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon from the chapel of the Rounsevell Funeral Home. Casket bearers to Mountain Lawn cemetery for interment will be Clarence Pittenger, John Morgando, Ray Dillavou, Peter Stabio, Ralph Dexheimer and Harold Treweek. He was a member of the Homestake Veterans association. Lead Daily Call, Wednesday, March 31, 1948, page 4: Homestake Veteran Is Buried Today Many friends from Lead and the Whitewood vicinity attended funeral rites in memory of Fred J. Best at 2 o'clock this afternoon from the chapel of the Rounsevell Funeral Home. The casket was surrounded with flowers. The Rev. Paul E. Parker, pastor of the Lead Presbyterian church, conducted the rites. Mrs. N.W. Stewart, soloist, sang two hymns, "In the Garden" and "Crossing the Bar." Her accompaniments were played on the piano by Mrs. W.J. Schoen. Casket bearers to Mountain Lawn cemetery for interment were Clarence Pittenger, John Morgando, Ray Dillavou, Peter Stabio, Ralph Dexheimer and Harold Treweek. Mr. Best, a member of the Homestake VEterans Association, died unexpectedly at 4 o'clock Sunday morning at the family residence, following a lengthy illness, from which he was apparently making recovery. He is survived by his wife, the former Margaret Black, a son, Fred Jr. and two little daughters, Peggy Lou and Beth Ann; his mother, Mrs. Louis Kriniger of Belle Fourche; a brother, Walter of Rapid City, and four sisters, one of whom, Mrs. Guy Montgomery of Gillette, came to Lead for the rites. He was born in Whitewood on August 2, 1902 and had been employed by the Homestake since 1920. Homestake Veterans' Association records note the following: Fred J.
