Description	:	The following provided by Find A Grave contributor "Cara": Fred Romain, 70, for 35 years farmer and rancher in the southern part of Liberty County was found dead in a field on his ranch near Augusta Monday afternoon. Kenneth McClain, Romain's partner in the Sawtooth ranch, found the body. Mr. Romain apparently had suffered a heart attack while working on his invention, the Basin Seeder, which he intended to move into Great Falls where he could work on it this winter. Frederick Romain was born July 20, 1886 in Lively Grove, Illinois. During his childhood the family moved to Idaho. In 1913, Mr. and Mrs. Romain came to Montana and homesteaded 30 miles southeast of Chester, where they lived and farmed for some 35 years. In 1948 he formed a partnership with McClain for the purchase of the Sawtooth Hereford ranch, leaving the home farm and ranch to the management of his sons. Fred Romain was an inventor as well as farmer and rancher. His Basin seeder, on which he has been working for years, has been generally accepted as a great improvement. The seeder was displayed at the Northern Montana State Fair at Great Falls. Articles have appeared in farm publications over a wide area. Fred has been a breeder of Polled Hereford cattle for many years, and the Romain Herefords are known all over this part of the country. He had lived in several states and had traveled most of the nation, but Fred Romain preferred Montana. He was convinced that there was just no place like Montana. Survivors include his widow, Josepha Romain, Great Falls; six sons, Lawrence, Great Falls; Alfred, Lompoc, California; Clarence, Raymond, Bernard, and John, all of whom farm south of the Marias River; two daughters, Mrs. Irvin (Delores) Hutchison, Chester, and Mrs. Gust (Lena) Hoene, Cottonwood, Idaho; a brother, Dominic and a sister, Ann, both of Spokane, Washington.
