Merle Hutchens passed away Friday, June 27, 2008, at Bishop Place in Pullman. Merle grew up in Pomeroy and the surrounding area and graduated from Pomeroy High School. He farmed with his parents until he entered the U.S. Army, serving in World War II from 1941 to 1945 in the European Theater. Following his honorable discharge from the service, Merle returned to Colfax, where his family had moved, and lived there until 2007 when he moved to Bishop Place in Pullman. He married Louise Leinweber on Nov. 30, 1947, at Peace Lutheran Church in Colfax. He worked as a mechanic for Jones Truck and Implement for about 20 years, keeping many of the area farmers' tractors and combines running beyond their years. He retired from the Washington State Highway Department after 15 years of employment as a diesel mechanic. He was a 60-plus-year member of the Parvin Grange, belonged to the American Legion, and was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Peace Lutheran Church. He loved farming, refinishing furniture, traveling, reading, football games, and spending as much time as he could with family and friends, whether it was work or play. He is survived by his daughter, Marlene Guse, and granddaughter Alexis of Pullman; four stepgrandchildren; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Gene and Queenie Leinweber of Colfax; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Alvis; sisters, Fern and Dorothy; his wife, Louise; and son-in-law, Craig Guse. Viewing will be from 9 to 5 p.m. today at Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Peace Lutheran Church in Colfax. Burial with military honors will follow at the Colfax Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home of Colfax is in charge of arrangements. Published in the Lewiston Tribune.
