She was born in 1919, the seventh child of Eli Coole and Lillian (Smith) Coole. She was fond of the fact her parents named most of their children after jewels, and referred to the bevy of beauties as the "Coole Jewels." She always spoke mystically of growing up on a dryland homestead in eastern Montana. She was born in 1919, the seventh child of Eli Coole and Lillian (Smith) Coole. She was fond of the fact her parents named most of their children after jewels, and referred to the bevy of beauties as the "Coole Jewels." She always spoke mystically of growing up on a dryland homestead in eastern Montana. Garnet developed a love for the land, a hearty fortitude for adversity, as well as a creative gift for poetry and prose. Combined with a love of God and country, these characteristics served her well. She left the pine coulees of Rosebud County and ventured into the mountains of western Montana, as a young bride. Garnet married Paul Stephenson July 6, 1936. They had four children whom they mentored in genuine character and work ethic, as well as a propensity for learning. Garnet loved to recall her years lived at high altitude, but found abiding comfort in her retirement cabin on the banks of a flowing stream, west of Anaconda. Garnet was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Merton and Glen; sisters, Opal, Pearl, Ruby, and Crystal; daughter, Faith and husband, Charles Willems; and grandchildren, Yvonne and Barry Willems. Her husband Paul also preceded her in death on April 2, 2008. The couple passed within an hour of each other although in separate facilities. She is survived by her son, Eli "Bud" (Mary) Stephenson of North Carolina; daughter, Kathleen (Gerald) Bradley of Mississippi; and daughter, Sally Barker of Butte; grandchildren, Jodi Gardner of Idaho, Faith Everling of Anaconda, Richard Willems of Spokane, Wash., Steve Willems of Miles City, Vicky Lynne Duesman of Texas, and LeAnne McGarr of Mississippi; as well as five great-grandchildren. Her younger sisters, Agate and Vera, also survive her. Celebration of Life Services for Garnet and Paul will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 5, in KT Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Derksen celebrating the passage of life into life. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time. Interment will take place in New Hill Cemetery. Service arrangements are under the care of KT Riddle Funeral Homes. Memorials are suggested to Project Care of Anaconda.
