Paul was born in 1913, the second son of L.E. and Mary (McGraw) Stephenson. Most of his early childhood was spent with his immigrant Irish grandparents, James and Rosa (McKay) McGraw. He developed a deep respect for all people, a reverence for the land, and an innate ability to communicate with animals during many pleasant hours along the Yellowstone River in eastern Montana. Upon the death of his father, his grandmother, Margaret MacIntyre Stephenson, journeyed from the sand hills of Nebraska to add her comforting hand to Paul. At age 11, he began freighting coal across the open prairie country after school to provide income for his mother and three younger brothers. His father had been a teamster, and Paul quickly applied his father's trade. He completed his senior year of high school early to hire on for lambing at Johnny Gray's. Paul reminisced of his grandma Rosa driving her car through rutted gumbo roads to take him to his graduation with the other students. He unselfishly sold his own livestock, along with his brother Jim's, so his older brother, Jim, could attend the university in Missoula. Perhaps if the Depression had not deepened, Paul could have attended in time. Instead, he was a very self-learned man of historical matters. He had an admirable vocabulary. His memory served him well into his 90s. His grandchildren benefited from his memories and ageless wisdom, as well as his moral compass - rare and valuable assets in these times. His sense of humor was ever with him. Paul married Clara Garnet Coole July 6, 1936. They both loved the mountains and moved almost immediately to Park County, settling in the Chadborn / Clyde Park area. They bore four children there before moving to the Anaconda area. Paul commuted to the smelter for 20 years; alongside high altitude ranching at Echo Lake, where he and Garnet raised Scotch Highland Cattle. It was a hard life, but his children had the benefit of knowing a love for water and land, communicating with animals, and witnessing respect for all people. The couple retired to a lower altitude on Warm Springs Creek, west of Anaconda. His parents; grandparents; brothers, Jack, James, Bill, and Vince; daughter, Faith Eileen and husband, Charles Willems; and grandchildren, Yvonne and Barry Willems, preceded Paul in death. His wife, Garnet, also passed on April 2, 2008. Paul is survived by his son, Eli "Bud" (Mary) Stephenson of North Carolina; daughter Kathleen (Gerald) Bradley of Mississippi; and daughter, Sally Barker of Butte; six grandchildren, Jodi Gardner of Idaho, Faith Everling of Anaconda, Richard Willems of Spokane, Wash., Steve Willems of Miles City, Vicky Lynne Duesman of Texas, and LeAnne McGarr of Mississippi; five great-grandchildren; good friends and neighbors; as well as many dedicated caregivers, including Sandy Glenn and Jeannie Stone.
