But the tragedy wasn't discovered until the next day. The fog had set in so thick Sunday night that no one even knew a deadly fire had started. But hours later, a home was destroyed and the Ulysses community had lost one of their own, 49-year-old Gary Fiala. The smoke stack that stood in the middle of the house is the only remnant still standing. Investigators say the deadly fire destroyed the rest of the rural Ulysses home going completely unnoticed. Julie Reiter, Butler County Attorney, says, "By the time anyone noticed that the fire had actually occurred, the house had already been totally destroyed." As well as the life of 49-year-old Gary Fiala who neighbors say lived in the home since childhood. The fog that night was so thick, even the nearest neighbor a quarter mile away didn't see or smell anything. Reiter says, "I could see where there would be nobody who'd have seen the fire occur or the smoke that resulted from it." It wasn't until Monday afternoon when someone came to feed the cows on the property that the destruction was discovered. Reiter says the loss especially difficult in such a close-knit community. "A fire fatality is tragic in and of itself. When you have a situation like this where it's a complete destruction of a residence and almost a complete destruction of the human remains, I can only imagine it's devastating not only to the family but also to the neighbors and the friends of the community." So as the remains continue to smolder, the memory of Gary Fiala will continue to stand tall, much like the chimney stack too strong to destroy. The neighbor we met with didn't want to speak on camera but says Gary Fiala was a good man who was a hard-working, friendly member of the small Ulysses community. This loss will be felt by many. Investigators say they'll likely never know the exact cause of the fire because of the extent of the damage. But they say they don't expect foul play. Gary L.
