Visitation Services will be held from 9:30-10:30 AM on Monday, September 21, 2020, in the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Watertown. Funeral Services will follow at 10:30 with Pastor Dan Ofstehage officiating. Burial will be held in the Pleasant Lutheran Cemetery at Vienna. Masks or face coverings are highly recommended. In Lieu of Flowers, Gary would appreciate memorials written to Joy Ranch of Watertown. Gary Thoreson was born on November 19, 1945, in Clark County, the son of Harold and Gertrude (McLain) Thoreson. Gary attended Willow Lake School, graduating in 1963. After graduating high school, Gary attended Nettleton College in Sioux Falls before enlisting in the United States Army in August of 1965. Gary was enlisted in the US Army, stationed in St Louis, MO, for the next three and a half years. In August of 1968, Gary transferred to the United States Navy. He was stationed in San Diego, CA. During his time in the Navy, Gary was awarded the National Defense Service Medal for his service to our country during the Vietnam Conflict. Gary was honorably discharged in 1970. Gary then moved to San Francisco, CA, for a period of time before moving back to Watertown, SD, in 1982. In Watertown, Gary worked at Oak Valley Farms until their closing. From there he found work as a maintenance man at Sioux Valley Cooperative until retiring. Gary enjoyed reading books and watching all kinds of sports, from High School to College to Professional! He loved spending time with his rescue dog, Tina, who truly was the love of his life. Gary also found a liking for politics. On top of it all, Gary enjoyed keeping in contact with friends and relatives, making sure to keep track of his hometown friends, where they moved to, and what was happening in their lives. When Gary had some extra free time, he could be found at the movies catching the newest release- with tons of popcorn, of course! Preceding him in death were his parents and two brothers, one in infancy and Bruce Thoreson. Survivors include his aunt, Mary McLain; special friends, David (Stacy) Berg and kids Tanner and Tava Berg; brothers Jim (Beth) Thoreson and Brian (Barb) Thoreson; niece, Toni Tidemann; and nephews, Bud Gusso and Mac Thoreson.
