The daughter of Millard and Fern Tomlinson Cress, she was born Sept. 25, 1938 at Iola. She graduated from Humboldt High School in 1956, attended the junior college at Iola one year before transferring to Kansas State University where she earned her bachelor's degree in home economics in 1960. On Aug. 20, 1961 she married Coy C. Allen at the United Methodist Church in Humboldt. She worked with the Wilson County Home Extension Agent, then moved to Smith County and worked at the Kensington Bank for two years. The family moved to Cowley when she was the home economist extension agent until 1965. In 1966 they moved to Manhattan where she operated a small day care until 1973. Upon returning to the Humboldt area, she worked a s a computer operator for the Southeast Kansas Farm Management Association out of Kansas State University for 20 years. She retired in 1993 due to health reasons.` She was active in 4-H and was an Allen County Project Leader for 18 years, helped judge at county and state fairs. She was the Master Clothing Leader for Allen County, conducted training sessions and helped with the state fair style revue. She provided an award to the most improved 4-H seamstress in the first three phases of clothing. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, 20 year member of PEO, all of Humboldt, the South Logan Extension Unit and Woodson County Foundation of Republic Women in Yates Center, and a Sunday School teacher for first, second and junior high classes. Survivors include her husband of the home; a son Karl D. Allen, Iola; a daughter, Brenda D. Hicks, Winfield; her parents, Millard and Fern Cress, Humboldt; a brother, Maynard Cress, Humboldt. She was preceded in death by a nephew and godchild. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Humboldt, the Rev. Peggy Hillmon officiating. Burial will be in De Witt Cemetery, rural Humboldt. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the Kunkel Funeral Chapel in Humboldt, in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gayla Jo Allen elementary and Youth Sunday School Building Program at the church or to Kansas 4-H Foundation, and may be left at the funeral home.
