He was a delegate of the SAR convention 1973. He organized the Elks Lodge in Raleigh. He served as the Democrat Cty Chair for Grayson. He was a Mason and a Shriner. He was appointed a Colonel of the state of Georgia by Gov Eugene Talmadge. He had a life membership in the Crippled Children's League of America. He organized the brotherhood of St Andrew's and Good Shepherd Church in Raleigh NC. The SAR said the following remarks at the burial: " We are here to lay our compatriot in his last earthly resting place. He has left our earthly garden for a home beyond this mortal realm. We hold him in our Garden of Memory. Those of us who remain share the sorrow of his passing and feel the touch of nature which makes the earth kin. We do not lose the ones we love, they only go before us to where there is everlasting life. There sorrows are no more: there the Soul will live with God and Peace is everywhere. We do not lose the ones we love...God takes them in his care. I place here as the last floral tribute of our SAR society this Rose of Remembrance....Farewell, Compatriot Gayle."
