George Dunkel, 85 George Andrew Dunkel of Valentine, passed away December 1, 2004 at the Cherry County Hospital in Valentine. He was born July 20, 1919 at Ashby, Nebraska to John and Allie Laurie (Clark) Dunkel. His mother died when he was four years old. George attended Ashby School through the 10th grade, then George, his yoounger brother and his father moved to a ranch north of Burwell. He then graduated from Burwell High School. George met the love of his life Norma Gumb. They married February 6, 1941 in Hyannis. To this 63-year union, two daughters and one son were born. George worked as a ranch hand for 11 years. He moved his family northwest of Valentine in the fall of 1954. The family moved into Valentine in 1966, were George worked at a service garage until he retired. He liked fishing, livestock and being outdoors, especially in his flowerbed. In later years, his biggest joy was picking up aluminum cans. He loved to take his grandchildren tjrough the wild life refuge and playing ball with them. He was a big tease, and a very caring person; He was a loving husband and father, and enjoyed fixing things. His parents, four sisters and one brother predede George in death. He is survived by his wife, Norma of Valentine; daughters, Kathleen and husband Lonnie Hughes of Sargent, JoAnn and husband Ruch Bellin of Montrose, SD and son, Dean and wife Karin of Valentin; 14 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildre; 5 step-grandchildren and numberous nieces and nephews. Funeral service for George Dunkel was held on Saturday, December 4 at the United Methodist Church in Valentine. REV. Jeff Hale officiated at the 2:00 p. m. service. Burial followed at Mount Hope Cemetery in Valentine. Memorials may be amde to the donor's choice. Sandoz Chapel of the Pines was in charge of funeral arrangements.
