Description	:	George Wieland George Anthony Wieland, husband, father, brother, teacher, superintendent, neighbor and friend passed away on April 20, 2016. Visitation with family present will begin 4pm Friday, April 29th at St. Michael Parish in Sioux Falls with prayer service at 7pm. Funeral Mass will be 11am Saturday, April 30th. Born on the 21st of November 1937 in Valley City, ND, George was the 4th of William and Mathilda (Berger) Wieland's 13 children. He attended St. Catherine Academy Boarding School. After a year at St. John's University, George transferred to Valley City State University. While in school, he spent summers working on the family farm in Dazey, ND or helping uncles and neighbors. In 1961 he graduated with degrees in Social Studies, Accounting, Music and German. George was a lifelong educator, teaching high school in ND (New Town, Pillsbury, Buchanan, and Drake PS), OH (Wooster PS), MN (Stephen PS), and CA (San Fernando HS, Los Angeles). He began his career in administration as first Principal (1973) and then Superintendent (1975) of Buchanan PS while also small grain farming with his brother Jim and completing an M.S. in Education Administration at NDSU (1981). George married Leona Rose "Lee" Mayers on October 9, 1982 in Lake Elmo, MN. They made their home in Drake, ND and were blessed with sons, Chris and Andrew. In the 17 years George spent as Superintendent of Drake PS he was a member of several ND Councils and Administrative Associations, and chaired the McHenry County School Masters, ND Small Organized Schools, and ND Teachers Professional Practices Commission. He was a member, 4th Degree, and Grand Knight of the local Knights of Columbus Council. He served as organist and choir director at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church and held various positions on the Drake Clinic Board. After a short retirement and a move to Sioux Falls George was hired as Superintendent of Kimball PS in 2001. He took great pride in procuring funding for and overseeing the building of a new high school, renovation of the elementary, and establishment of a high school program for Grass Ranch Hutterite Colony. After a second retirement in 2006 George's 41 years in education were extended by 6 years studying Spanish at Active Generations and then tutoring ESL at Caminando Juntos in Sioux Falls until his passing. George's greatest joy was hosting and visiting with family and friends. He loved sharing his interest in sports, history, politics, classical music, and card games. A weekly group pinochle competition was a particular pleasure. With an avid interest in historical sights, he made memorable trips throughout North America and Europe, and most recently to Cuba. George is survived by his wife, Leona; sons, Chris and Andrew; siblings: Paul (Jeanne), Mark (Barb), Sr. Joanne, Rita Koss, Rose Archer, Donna Krisch (Rich), and Linda Sen; and sisters-in-law: Margaret, Janice, Sally, and Murriel Wieland. Preceding him in death are his parents, William and Mathilda; siblings: Jack, Roman, Herman, Jim, and Paulette Kalberer; and brothers-in-law: John Koss, Jim Archer, Jon Kalberer, and Siddartha Sen. Burial will be June 5th, 3 pm at St. Mary's Church, 6 miles East of Dazey, ND. Published in Valley City Times-Record on May 20, 2016
