Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM Saturday, April 4th at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Valley City with Rev. Michael Schommer celebrant. Herman Wieland was born October 26, 1936 in Valley City, ND, the son of William and Mathilda (Berger) Wieland. He grew up on a farm near Dazey, ND and attended St. Catherine's School in Valley City where he graduated in 1955. He attended St. John's University, Collegeville, MN and Valley City State Teeachers College (VCSU today). He received a degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas in 1962. On June 29, 1963, he married Sally Moore in Aurora, CO. He was head of the Physical Therapy Department at Mercy Hospital in Valley City for 35 years. He will be remembered for his gift of song, when treating patients and his dedication to their recovery. He retired in 1998. Following his retirement, he helped his son, David, with farming and the sheep operation. He planted a large garden and many trees on the farm, as well as, on the grounds of St. Mary's church. He enjoyed making and sharing apple pies in the fall and visiting with friends. He loved taking the grandchildren on walks, showing them the farm; and in recent years; enjoyed holding little hands and giving a big smile. Herman was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church and served as Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus in 1973-74. He sang for the Valley Troubadors and was president in 1978. He is survived by his wife, Sally, four children, Alison Rein and Robert Rein, Ashby, MN, Cindy (Steve) Noack, Fargo, ND; David (Kim) Wieland, Rogers, ND; and Kelly (David) Schroeder, Fergus Falls, MN; and twelve grandchildren: Theron, Megan, and Jacob Rein; Zachary, Grace, Jeremy, and Michael Noack; Adam, Nick, and Samantha Wieland; and Luke and Anna Schroeder. Other survivors include his brothers, George (Leona), James (Muriel), Paul (Jeanne), Mark (Barbara); his sisters Sister Joanne Wieland, Rita Koss, Rose (James) Archer, Paulette Kalberer, Linda Sen, Donna (Rich) Krisch; sisters-in-law Margaret Wieland, Janice Wieland, Janice Purcell, brother-in-law Barry (Maggie) Moore and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, twin brother Roman, brother Jack, and brothers-in-law Sid Sen, John Koss, and Jon Kalberer.
