James entered the kingdom of heaven surrounded by his wife and children. James F. Wieland was born November 18, 1938 to William Q. and Mathilda (Berger) Wieland in Valley City, ND. He was raised on the family farm east of Dazey and attended school at St. Katherine's Boarding School, Valley City, ND and Sibley Trail School, Sibley, ND before graduating from St. Katherine's High School, Valley City, ND in 1957. Upon graduation he continued on the family farm prior to entering Valley City State College, Valley City, ND where he studied his love of chemistry. He was later drafted by the United States Army and served from 1961-1963, at Ft. Carson, Colorado Springs, CO and Ft. Hood, Colleen, TX. Upon completion of service he returned home and later met his wife, Murriel (Neys), Pingree, ND. They were married January 2, 1965 at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Pingree, ND. They established their homestead on a farm near Dazey, ND where they resided for 49 years together, raising six children. He was a true steward of the soil and loved the land, agriculture and the rural way of life. He spent his life farming small grains and sunflowers, haying and raising cattle. St. Mary's Catholic Church was central to his life. Family, community and God served as his lifelong compass. He served on the St. Mary's Church Board of Directors and was a member of the St. Mary's Men's Choir. He was a valued pilar of the community and gave generously of his time and talents. He actively served on the Dazey Township Board, Barnes County Township Board, Dazey Township Election Board, Commander of the Dazey Legion, Valley City Winter Show Board, Dazey Rural Fire Department and Rural Electric Association Membership Advisory Board. He enjoined the comradery and fellowship of the Dazey Sodbusters Club and was awarded the "Sodbusters of the Year" award in 2011. He loved music and singing and was a member of the Valley Troubadours Men's Choir. "Pops" loved life and was admired and respected by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was an avid sportsman and greatly enjoyed hunting waterfowl, whitetail and fox. He had a great interest in politics and loved to debate with anyone who would engage. To know him was to love him, always the life of the party and eternal optimist. He will be greatly missed by his family and many, many friends. He is survived by his wife, Murriel, of 49 years; children, Michael, Ellen Case, Ann Knecht, Eric, Carl and Paula Marker, and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Joseph, 3 brothers, 1 sister and 4 brothers-in-law.
