George, the only son of Steven Edgar and Chloe Campfield Speedling, was born January 16, 1886 at Canby, Iowa, Adair County. Speedling passed away early Wednesday morning, August 21, at his home in Casey, after a long lingering illness. George, the only son of Steven Edgar and Chloe Campfield Speedling, was born January 16, 1886 at Canby, Iowa, Adair County. He had five sisters, where the family lived, until the death of the father, when George was fourteen years old, leaving the burden of raising the family to the mother, with the help of son George. They attended rural school near Canby until they moved to a home near Greenfield, where they grew to young man and womanhood and married. George moved to a farm near Casey in 1911 in Guthrie County. Here he met Miss Etta Overmeyer and on December 18, 1912, they were married at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Overmeyer, northwest of Casey. To this union one son, Ralph E., was born. George is survived by his wife Etta, son Ralph, and daughter-in-law, Marjorie; two grandchildren, Mrs. Larry (Caryl) Taylor and her husband Larry, of Omaha; Gary Speedling and his wife Sandra, of Earlham; five great grandchildren: Mike and Scott Taylor of Omaha; Brian, Jollene, and Teresa Speedling of Earlham; two sister, Mrs. Leona Abbott of Creston, and Mrs. Gertrude Jensen of Phoenix, Ariz; one aged aunt, Mrs. Belle Campfield of Winterset. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Mrs. Ben (Cornelia) LaHue of DeKalb, Ill.; Mrs. Herbert (Gladys) Reason of Adair, and Mrs. Harley (Alice) Reason of Menlo.
