The Rev. John Wipperman officiated at the services. George Behrends of Phoenix, Ariz., and formerly of Monticello, died June 5 at his daughter's in Phoenix. George Behrends was born Sept 4, 1896, in Jones County, the son of Ben and Meta Hayen Behrends. He received his education in the Lovell Township schools, and married Edna Marie Bradbrook on Feb. 27, 1927, in Monticello. She preceded him in death in 1964. The couple farmed in Jones County for 10 years, and in 1944 they moved to Cedar Rapids. In 1948, they moved to Huron, S.D., where he worked as an electrician. He also worked at a packing plant in Huron until his retirement. Mr. Behrends was a lifelong member of the American Lutheran Church. He is survived by four daughters, Elaine Townsend of Monroe, Mich., Gaylene Styles of Phoenix, Ariz., Yvonne Behrends of Sioux Falls, S.D. and Janann (Jeanie) Gunderson of Sisseton, S.D.; a sister, Elizabeth Freese of Provo, Utah; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three brothers and two sisters. Casketbearers were Scott Townsend, Dan Townsend, Steve Townsend, Larry Townsend, Kevin Townsend and Kevin Behrends. A memorial fund has been established. Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello, was in charge of arrangements.
