He had been affected with rheumatism during the past fifteen years, which never left him. Recently a severe case of dropsy developed and also he was badly afflicted with heart trouble. It was through t for a time that medical aid would be able to save him but to no avail. The end came peacefully last Sunday afternoon. Mr. Behrends was born in the town of Rispel, Hanover, Germany, April 11, 1863. He was a son of the late Wilke and Hilke (nee Edzards) Behrends. He was baptized in infancy and confirmed at the age of fourteen years in the Lutheran church. He immigrated to the United States in 1881, and came directly to Wayne Township where he settled. He was married in that township to Miss Hille Margarete Hayen. There were seven children born to this union, six of whom survive, viz: Wilke, John Henry, Bennie, George, Mrs. A.E. Schatz, and Miss Elise Behrends. Shortly after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Behrends removed to Bowen's Prairie in Richland Township, where they have lived for thirty one years. During Mr. Behrends' illness, the heavy work on his farm was conducted by his sons, Bennie and George, under his direction. In addition to his wife and six children, Mr. Behrends is survived by four brothers, John, Henry, and William Behrends of Monticello and Gearhard Behrends of Pomeroy. He is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. Albert Heiken, Mrs. Fritz Reuter, and Mrs. Henry Null, all of Monticello. At the time of his death, Mr. Behrends was the deacon of St. Matthew's Lutheran church of Monticello. He took great interest in the church's welfare and faithfully and conscientiously performed his duties as an officer of that church. He was ever ready to support its undertakings and was especially interested in the new parsonage and the plans for building the new church. His death is a heavy loss to his bereaved wife and children, as well as his many friends. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon. Short services were conducted at the family home in Richland Township at 1 o'clock and final services were held at the St. Matthew's Lutheran church at 1:30 p.m. The services wee conducted by Rev. S.M. Ide, the pastor of that church. Burial was had at Oakwood cemetery.
