Hewitt, son of Isaiah Hewitt, died at his home north-east of this city several miles on Sunday, May 31, 1896, aged 31 years, 2 months and 21 days. He was well spoken of in the neighborhood in which he lived. The remains were buried in the Mumford cemetery. The cause of his death was dysentery. ============================ From the Barbour County Index., June 3, 1896: Died – At his home in the northwest part of Sharon township, at 6 o’clock Sunday morning May 31, 1896, G. C. Hewitt, son of Isaiah Hewitt, after a short illness. The cause of death was dysentery. The subject of this notice was born March 8, 1865, and leaves a father, five brothers and four sisters; his mother, one brother and one sister having preceded him to the better land. He was a good citizen, a kind brother, and highly esteemed by his neighbors as was evidenced by the large concourse that attended the funeral. A very appropriate and touching funeral sermon was preached by Rev. J. D. Niles, of Kingman county, from St. Mark 8th chapter and 36th verse, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Mumford cemetery. ‘Tis hard to break the tender cord, When love has bound the heart. ‘Tis hard, so hard, to speak the words, “We must forever part.” Dearest loved one, we must lay thee In the peaceful grave’s embrace, But thy memory will be cherished Till we see thy heavenly face. There is mourning ‘round a hearthstone, There is silence o’er the neighborhood; For the sunlight of a presence, Has been quenched by sudden gloom, Manhood’s hopes and dreams extinguished By the darkness of the tomb. -- A Friend
