[Mumford news] ============ From the Medicine Lodge Cresset, January 5, 1900: Married: On New Year's day, at 12 o'clock, a quiet wedding was solemnized at the home of the bride's parents near Nashville. The ceremony was conducted by Rev. S. McKibben, of Spivey. The contracting parties were Wibur [sic] W. Hewitt, of Barber county, and Florence E. Hendricks, of Nashville. Mr. Hewitt is a young man of excellent reputation and commands the esteem of a large number of acquaintances and friends. The bride is a lovely young lady of beautiful character and gentle disposition. A bright and happy future will most surely follow them. The guests who witnessed the ceremony were invited to partake of an excellent dinner. They have the well wishes of a large circle of acquaintances. Signed: S. McKibben. =========== From the Barber County Index, September 8, 1909: The ladies of the sewing circle of the Mumford vicinity gave a delightful party and ice cream social at the home of Wilbur Hewitt and wife on Tuesday night of last week. A large crowd was out and all enjoyed themselves to the extreme limit. Medicine Lodge was represented at the social by Mrs. Emma Rankin and sons, Henry and Will, and C.C. Painter and wife. They made the trip in Henry Rankin’s new touring car and it was a nice little trip. Mr. Hewitt and his wife and the ladies who assisted them are excellent entertainers. ============ From the Barber County Index, February 16, 1910: Nashville – R.D. No. 2 The Sewing Circle had a very enjoyable meeting at Wilbur Hewitt’s one day last week. Mum’s the word. ============= From the Barber County Index, February 23, 1910: Nashville – R.D. No. 2 Wilbur Hewitt is enjoying a visit from his sister, Miss Ruth Hewitt. She is State Deaconess of the Methodist Episcopal Church. ============= "Committed Suicide" Medicine Lodge Cresset February 10, 1916 Last Sunday about noon Wilbur W. Hewitt committed suicide by drinking carbolic acid, at his home in Ridge township near the Mumford school house. Mr. Hewitt had just finished shaving and changed his clothes intending to take his family to church and Sunday school in the afternoon. Mrs. Hewitt was busy engaged in getting dinner, and Mr. Hewitt stated that he would go out and do the noon day chores. When dinner was ready the little boy was sent out to call his father, but failing to find him, he returned to the house, when his mother sent him back again. He then went to the barn and discovered his father lying dead in the hay mow. Dr. Morton of Nashville and Dr. Coleman of this city, who is coroner, were summoned and soon reached the scene of the tragedy. An investigation disclosed the fact that Mr. Hewitt had taken carbolic acid. The empty bottle was found near the body, and the dead man's mouth and lips were burned with the acid. The evidence of suicide was so plain that the doctors decided that it would not be necessary to hold an inquest. Mr. Hewitt gave no intimation that he contemplated such an act, and his death greatly shocked the many friends. The wife was almost prostrated at the death. Mr. Hewitt was in good circumstances and had no financial worry. He had been in very poor health for some time having undergone and operation for appendicitis some time ago, which ever since had given him more or less trouble, and the supposition is that worry over this is what caused him to take his life and thus end his trouble. Mr. Hewitt was widely known in the north part of the county and in this city. He was an honest Christian man, and had the esteem and respect of all who knew him. The funeral services were held yesterday at 11:00 o'clock at the family residence, conducted by Rev. Jones, pastor of the M. E. church of Nashville. The body was brought to this city for burial in Highland cemetery. The Masonic lodge, of which Mr. Hewitt was a member, held impressive ritualistic burial services at the grave at 4:00 o'clock in the afternoon. The wife and children and surviving brothers and sisters of the unfortunate man have the profound sympathy of numberless friends in their overwhelming sorrow. - - - - Wilbur Wilfred Hewitt was born in Dickinson county, Kansas, March 4, 1877; died at his home in Ridge township, Barber county, Kansas, February 6, 1916, aged 38 years, 11 months and 2 days. He was married to Miss Florence E. Hendricks, January 1, 1900. Two children, a son and a daughter, Rolland and Nirene, blessed the union, who, with his wife, three brothers and four sisters survive. His father and mother passed away several years ago. The brothers and sisters are A. N. Hewitt of Florence, Cal.; James Hewitt of League City, Texas; Frank P. Hewitt of this city; Ida M. Hewitt Ends His Life by Taking Carbolic Acid – Reasons Unknown Wilbur Wilfred Hewitt, a prosperous farmer living south-west of Nashville ended his own life Sunday by taking carbolic acid. He had gone to the barn supposedly to do some work, leaving the house around 11 o'clock. This being the last time he was seen alive. By his not returning for his mid-day meal his oldest son went in search and was horrified to find the prostrate form of his father lying on the hay in the mow of the barn. That he had contemplated doing the deed some few moments before he done so was the fact that he had taken off his overshoes and gloves and placed the gloves inside the shoes. He left no word explaining his actions and his relatives and friends are at a loss to know why he desired to depart from this life. He was financially in good circumstances and apparently was always carefree and was never known to have melancholy periods at any time before. The conclusion that all seem to grasp for his committing the deed is the fact that he has been in poor health for some time and while out at work became temporarily deranged from this cause. He was a leader in his community, not only as a farmer and business man, but was also prominent in his church and Sunday school work, and in social entertainments. He was a good provider for his family, was a kind father and husband and the very best kind of neighbor. W. W. Hewitt was born in Dickinson county, Kansas, February 1, 1875, and died on the 6th day of February 1916. Aged 41 years and 5 days. He moved to this part of the state in September 1884. Here he met Florence Hendricks with whom he was united in marriage on January 1, 1900. To this union 4 children were born, two of which preceded him to the glory world. He leaves to mourn his departure a wife, a son, a daughter, 3 brothers, 4 sisters and a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted at the home Tuesday at 11 o'clock by Rev. D. J. M. Jones of this city after which the remains were taken to the Medicine Lodge cemetery where the last said rites of the Masonic lodge, of which order he was a member, were rendered. ============= "Tragic Death" The Barber County Index February 9, 1916 Wilbur Wilfred Hewitt Takes Own Life, Drinks Carbolic Acid Found Dead in Hay Mow by His Son The people of Ridge township were greatly shocked and deeply grieved to learn of the tragic death of Wilbur W. Hewitt about 12:00 o'clock Sunday, February 6th. Mr. Hewitt went to the barn about 11:00 o'clock, apparently in good spirits, to do some work. Mrs. Hewitt was preparing the noon meal and when dinner was ready she sent one of the children to the barn to get the father. The child was horrified to find the father lying prostrate on a pile of straw in the hay mow and ran to the house and told Mrs. Hewitt, who immediately summoned Dr. Morton of Nashville and County Coroner Coleman of this City. The doctors soon reached the Hewitt home and after a careful examination of the body, agreed that Mr. Hewitt had caused his own death by taking carbolic acid. An empty bottle which had contained the poison was found several feet from where Mr. Hewitt's body was lying and there were traces of the acid's burning the tongue and mouth. The decision of the two physicians was satisfactory to all concerned and for that reason a coroner's jury was not called. Mr. Hewitt left no word explaining his action; he was in good circumstances financially and had at no time expressed a desire to depart this life. The only plausible cause of his undoing is the fact that his health had been poor for some time. He underwent an operation for appendicitis some years previous but the operation failed to bring relief and the deceased had suffered much from stomach and kidney disorder, besides. Mr. Hewitt was a leader in his community in many ways. He was a successful farmer and business man and prominent in church and Sunday school work. He was always kind to his family, a good provider and with the exception of his heretofore mentioned ailment, seemed always to be perfectly care-free and happy and was, as far as is known, not subject to periods of melancholy and despondency. He had always lived a clean, moral and Christian life and his sudden, tragical demise has left his wife and children and relatives heart-broken.
