Read More	GEORGE CROSS EMERSON PIONEER, DIED JANUARY 28 SIXTY=TOW YEARS A RESIDENT OF MILLS COUNTY FUNERAL FRIDAY AFTERNOON George Cross, a 62 year resident of easter Mills County, passed away Thursday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. F. Smith of Emerson. He had been in poor health for some time past but was lately taken much worse and his daughter had him taken to their home where every care and attention possible was given him, that loving hands and medical skill could provide. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 2:30 from the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Smith, Rev. M. R. Wilson, pastor of the Methodist Church, conducted the service and preached the sermon. Rev. J. F. Stille of the Baptist Church offered prayer. Music was furnished by Mrs. Clara Thorson and Mrs. Louise Birdsall, who sang three beautiful songs chosen by the family. Interment was in the Emerson Cemetery by the side of the wife, who preceded him in death in 1911. The pall bearers were close friends and relatives of th deceased. They were C. S. Vestal, W. E. McGrew, Harold Hossle, Arthur Smith, Elmer Bass, and Lawrence Smith. George Cross was born in Nova Scotia, Canada, December 13, 1842. He received his education in the common schools of his native country and in 1870 came to the United States, locating in Mills County, Iowa. He was married to Miss Martha Durbin, December 22, 1873. They immediately established their home on the farm three miles northwest of Emerson where for 55 years they lived. He built up one of the best stock farms in the county and was for many years one of the most extensive and successful stock raisers and cattle feeders of this community. Here also was born and grew to maturity their fine family. Six children came to bless their home. One son, who died in infancy and 5 daughters. In 1899 they left the farm and moved to Emerson where they had bought a nice home and where they lived although he still retained for many years his active farming interests. He also took an active part in the civic affairs and was a familiar figure in Emerson for many years. On January 10, 1911, the wife and mother passed away. Previous to this the daughter, Jennie, Clara, and Nina were married and now the responsibility of the home was assumed by the daughters, Emma and Lulu. In September 1912, Emma passed away leaving the father and Lulu alone. Again the companionship was broken by the death of Lulu which occurred in May 1922. He continued to live alone, although frequently urged by his daughters to make his home with them, until his last sickness when he was taken to the home of his daughters, Mrs. A. F. Smith, where he passed away as noted above at the age of 89 years, 1 month, and 15 days. Mr. Cross was a good man, a loyal friend and neighbor, and honest in his convictions and dealings. In late years the hand of time begun to weigh heavily upon him and he found much enjoyment in visiting with old time friends and neighbors. He leaves to mourn his passing three daughters, Mrs. Irving Fisher of Hastings, Mrs. A. F. Smith of Emerson, and Mrs. J. R.
