Description	:	On Tuesday afternoon, Emerson people were greatly shocked to hear of the sudden death of Miss Lulu Mary Cross, one of the best known ladies in this vicinity. She passed away at her home in west Emerson after a brief illness Tuesday afternoon abut three o’clock. She was taken with heart failure ad lived but a very short time after the attack. She had been in about her usual health until that day. The funeral services will be held this Thursday afternoon at two o’clock from the methodist Church. Malvern Leader, Malvern, Iowa, Thursday, May 3, 1923, page 7 MARY LULU CROSS Mary Lulu Cross was born on the home farm near Emerson, Iowa, July 14, 1879 and died at the home in Emerson, May 1, 1923, at the age of 44 years, 5 months, and 17 days. She united with the Methodist church of this place August 25, 1895 at the early age of 16 years. She was the second daughter in the family of five sisters. He childhood was spent in the home and country school, but her young womanhood and the years since has been living here among her friends and for an exemplary Christian character she was unsurpassed. Faithful to every church obligation; Secretary of Sunday School, treasurer of the Mission Society, Secretary of the Ladies Aid Society; also Conference Secretary and every duty attended to with a zeal that has been a wonderful help to her pastors and people in the advancement of her Master’s Kingdom. And as secretary of the Cemetery Association, she was an efficient and faithful worker. Her mother dying several years ago, left her the responsibility of the home, caring for her father and younger sisters. In that as in other things, nothing was left undone that could add to the comfort to those sharing that home. As neighbor, as friend, none know her but to respect and love her. Kind acts having been her daily living; ever ready in sickness and need, with cheery helpfulness that seemed to have no bounds. How we shall miss her in the home, in the church, in the everyday walk of life. A vacancy is made that will not soon be filled, because seemingly God has given so few of such self-sacrificing Christian characters and now she is with Him sharing all the rewards that are given to the faithful ones. her mother, as has been mentioned, the only brother, and one sister preceded her to that Great Beyond, leaving her aged father and three sisters, Mrs. A. f. Smith, and Mrs. Irving Fisher of Emerson; Mrs. Ray Coons of Macedonia, besides nieces, nephew, and a host of friends. The funeral was held at the Methodist Church Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. R. V. Felt, assisted by Rev. W. A. Morgan of Harlan, Iowa. A quartet composed of Mrs. Merritt Taylor, Mrs. J. A. Thorson, Jr., Cameron Scott, and Ray Fields, sang several beautiful selections. The pall bearers were W. W. Able, Elmer Bass, Edd Stone, W. A. Fisher, Wilbur Morrison, and Arthur Honeyman.
