Dewey served as the chief executive officer of the State Bank of Chester from 1950 until his retirement in 1974. He held many positions of community leadership throughout his life in Chester and was a loyal member of the United Methodist Church. The following is the obituary of George Dewey Van Cleef: George Dewey Van Cleef was born August 2, 1898, on a farm northwest of Hubbell, Nebraska, the ninth child of George Clark Van Cleef and Margaret Brollier Van Cleef. He departed this life on April 9th, 1982, at the age of 83 years and 250 days at Republic County Hospital in Belleville, Kansas. After attending Hubbell High School and Fairbury business school, he started his banking career at the Harbine Bank in Fairbury in 1917. In 1920, he became associated with the Farmers and Merchants Bank of Hubbell which later became part of the Hubbell Bank. He was married to Willa A. Holly of Narka, Kansas, on August 6th, 1924. She preceeded him in death in 1979. To this union was born one daughter, Bonnie June. In 1933, because banks were in financial trouble, Dewey was appointed by the government as their agent in closing out the accounts of the Chester State Bank. In 1934, he became manager for the newly formed Chester Credit Cooperative Association and held that position until 1950 when the State Bank of Chester was chartered under his leadership. He served as its chief executive officer until his retirement in 1974, thus completing a 57 year career in the Banking and Insurance business. Dewey and his family moved to Chester in 1933 at which time he became a member of the United Methodist Church of Chester. For 31 years he was an active member of the church choir and Administrative Board. He served on the church board of trustees, and held many different offices in the church. The Chester United Methodist Church will miss his loyal support. He also served as the mayor of Chester and also served for 2 terms on the Chester School Board. For 38 years he was a member of the Chester Community Club and held every office in that club. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, AF and AM No. 298 and the order of the Eastern Star No. 289. He was also past-president of the Hebron Rotary Club. Left to cherish his memory is his daughter, Mrs. Bonnie Porter and her husband, Harold; his three grandchildren, Alan Cole Porter of His (sic) wife Susan of Chester, Nebraska; Warren Van Porter of Denver, Colorado, and Timothy H. Porter of Kearney State College; his three great-grandchildren, Angela, Mick and Anthony Porter; his sister, Martha Morton of Fort Collins, Colorado; his nieces, nephews, friends, neighbors, customers and fellow church members. Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 13, 1982, at the United Methodist Church in Chester with Reverend Charles Mitchell presiding. Mrs. Pauline Frye was organist with Mrs. Irene Long and Mrs. Jayne Mitchell singing. Casket bearers were Jack Long, Rodney Peake, Max Derowitsch, William Mumm, Ronald Mumm and Neal Eickman. Honorary casket bearers were Clay Cafferty, Earnest Dunn, W.O. Baldwin, Robert Thomas, William Peithman and Emil Bohling. Interment was at the Chester Cemetery.
