W Melton, Cherokee, and a sister, Mary Higgins, South Beloit, Ill. Melton was a prominent and highly respected farmer and had lived near Cherokee for 43 years. He was born October 16, 1878, near Rockford, 111., a son of William Thomas and Elizabeth Melton. In company with his brother, A. W. Melton, he came to Cherokee county in l9OO and together they farmer a large tract of land seven and one-half miles northeast of the city. They worked together in partnership 41 years, dissolving the partnership only about a year ago. Melton lived with his brother's family for three years before his marriage in 1903 to Miss Hattie Bushnell. The Meltons had lived in Cherokee only three weeks. He had given up farming because of poor health. Melton was stricken as he and Mrs. Melton entered their home after a business trip down town. She had been attending a church meeting and he had been at the Wednesday livestock sale here. His death came shortly after the heart attack. The retired farmer was a member of the Cherokee Methodist, church.
