Bata conducted the service, which were attended by a vast concourse of relatives and friends of the deceased. The subject of this sketch was born on a farm near Cleveland, Ohio, September 4, 1848. Here he lived until he was fifteen years of age, when his parents heard the call of the west and started overland in a prairie schooner, drawn by a yoke of oxen. Reaching Boone, Iowa, they settled down. His father took up the avocation of farming. Here George remained with his parents and family until 1876, when he was married to Josephine Weaver, the ceremony being solemnized, February 9th of that year. For four years the couple made their home there, then, the urge of the pioneer spirit came to them. Answering the call of Nebraska's beckoning plains, they came to Knox county and settled on a homestead in the Walnut Grove township. Mr. Mott built their first house, a 14x20 frame structure, from lumber hauled with oxen from Plainview. Despite the destruction of crops by hail, drouth, prairie fires and grasshoppers, they remained and reared a fine family in the true western spirit. For a number of years all crops and produce were hauled to Niobrara, a distance of 25 miles. On several occasions, when the services of a doctor were needed, Mr. Mott was obliged to ride on horseback to Yankton, S.D. At first their nearest neighbors were five miles away and bands of none too friendly Indians roamed over the country, while cattle rustlers and their ilk plied their unlawful avocation. Mr. Mott became prominent in the social and political activities of the community and county. Thru thrift and industry, he acquired large land interests in this section. He was prominent as a farmer and stockman and enjoyed a wide acquaintance in the western part of Knox county. Four years ago he retired from active life and moved to Verdigre, where he continued to reside until the time of his death. Three years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Mott celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. His death marks the passing of another of those hardy souls, who left the settled communities farther east to found a new empire in what was then a wild and unsettled region. Today, we honor them for what they accomplished. Two weeks ago he was taken ill, on Saturday, April 13, 1929, he closed his eyes to the shifting scenes of life and passed peacefully out into the great beyond. He is survived by the widow and ten children, five boys and five girls: Frank S., Spencer, Nebr.; George J.,James A., William J. and Peter J., all of Walnut, Nebr.; Mrs. J.B. Hansen, Fenton, Iowa; Mrs. Josephine Groeling, Orchard, Nebr.; Mrs. Walter Braemon, Walnut, Nebr.; Julia of Verdigre; Mrs. Samuel Walton, Boone, Iowa. Four children preceded their father in death. He is also survived by three brothers, and one sister; W.R. Mott, Boone, Iowa; Frank S. Mott, Chicago; James L. Mott, Boone, Iowa and Mrs. Mary Holaen of Oregon. Twenty eight grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren also survive. Three brothers, Charles, Joseph and Fred, preceded him in death.
