Cook Sr., was born to Conrad Cook and Emma Schleuning Cook in Fairmont on October 29, 1906. He passed away on July 15, 1991, at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, at the age of 84 years, 8 months and 16 days. George grew up on his family’s farm outside of Fairmont. He was the oldest of eight children, including four sons and four daughters. He left home at the age of 23 to begin what became a lifetime career in accounting and auditing, first at the National Bank of Commerce in Lincoln from 1929 until 1932. During the Depression years of 1932 to 1934, George returned to the farm and assisted his parents. From 1934 until 1936 he worked with the Federal Emergency Relief Administration. On May 6, 1936, George marred Lucy Bethene Pangle, whose family farmed near Geneva. Immediately following the wedding, they left Nebraska to settle in Washington D.C., where he worked with the Veterans Administration and the General Accounting Office. In 1942, he was transferred to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers office in Omaha. Their home has been in Omaha since that time. George entered the Army of the United States of America during World War II. He joined the service in 1943, and served loyally and faithfully until his honorable discharge in 1945. George and Bethene began their family in 1948, with the birth of their daughter, Stephanie, followed in 1950 by the birth of a son, George Jr. George was always a strong support to his family, particularly emphasizing the value and importance of education. George worked until 1970, when he retired after 35 years with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. During his entire career as an auditor, he was a dedicated and loyal employee. Following retirement, George and Bethene travelled through much of the United States and spent a great deal of time tracing and researching the genealogy of their families. George was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters. He is survived by Bethene, his wife of 55 years, 2 months and 9 days; daughter and son-in-law Stephanie and Darrell Petska; son and daughter-in-law, George Jr. and Lynna Gene; five grandchildren, Hillary, Nicholas, Courtney, Carolyn and Allison Petska; and two sisters. A visitation was held in Omaha on Tuesday, July 16, followed the day by another period of visitation in Geneva at the Farmer & Son Funeral Home. A graveside service was conducted by George H. Cook Jr., who serves as a pastor in Lincoln. A military flag presentation was made during the service to the widow by Post 7102 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Post 68 of the American Legion.
