Hagaman, 82, who died Wednesday at his home in Alliance, was one of the early settlers laying the foundation for the ranching industry of the panhandle. Born in Livingston county, Ill; on June 8, 1862, Mr. Hagaman was the youngest of a family of six children, left fatherless when the senior George Hagaman died with Sherman's men on their march to the sea. Orphaned by the death of his mother, when he was eight years old, Mr. Hagaman reached manhood with experience in farm work that formed the basis for his lifes activity. He was married Dec. 11, 1884 to Miss Cassie Elizabeth Underwood at York, Nebr and in 1886 they came by oxen-drawn covered wagon into Western Nebraska bringing their infant son, Otto. After a brief sojourn in the Barrel Springs neighborhood, they settled on a tree claim 17 miles west of Alliance and 12 years later moved to the ranch southwest of Alliance which was their home until Mr. Hagaman retired in 1927. Mr Hagaman's company was sought by residents of the panhandle and visitors to this area because of his interest in regional history. His recollection of events before the coming of the railroad and through the pioneer years was very comprehensive. Many ranching families in the early years recall him as the unofficial counselor and aid of people all about him. Survivors are four daughters, Mrs. Harvey Dimond, St. Paul, Minn; Mrs. Alfred McMann, Mrs. Lyle Morse and Mrs. Josie Glau, Alliance; two sons, William G. Hagaman, Denver, and Otto E. Hagaman, Allinace; 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Two daughters, Sylvia and Ethel preceded him in death, and Mrs. Hagaman died in Alliance on May 25, 1939. Three of the grandsons are in the armed forces; Pvt. Ford Hagaman serving the South Pacific area, and Cpl. Hal McKinney and Cpl. James McKinney stationed in the States. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Presbyterian church, conducted by Rev. T. C. Osborne of Bayard, a friend of Mr. Hagaman's since pioneer days of this region. Interment was made in Evergreen cemetery southwest of Alliance, where Mrs. Hagaman and their daughter, Ethel, are buried. The cemetery was a part of the early day Carpenter Baptist church, of which Mr. Hagaman was a member. Miller Mortuary was in charge of funeral arrangements.
